Job summary

Talent STEM Ltd is seeking a Production Shift Manager for a 24-hour Energy-from-Waste facility in the South East England. You will lead the shift to ensure safe, compliant operation, deliver production targets, and coordinate waste processing, boiler, steam and turbine activities.

The role requires proven shift-based experience in Energy-from-Waste, strong DCS/control-room skills, and track record in people management and safety systems.

Qualifications

• Proven shift-based operational experience in Energy-from-Waste.
• Strong knowledge of waste combustion and incineration systems.
• Experience with boilers, steam systems and turbine-generation equipment.
• Experience managing plant through a DCS/control-room environment.
• People-management or supervisory responsibility.
• Experience with permit-to-work and safe systems of work.
• Understanding of emissions control and environmental compliance.
• Ability to remain calm and make sound operational decisions.
• Minimum five years' relevant operational experience.
• Minimum two years' people-management experience.
• HNC/HND in technical/engineering discipline preferred; relevant experience considered.

Responsibilities

• Taking operational control of the facility during your shift, delivering safety and production targets.
• Managing safe and efficient operation of the Energy-from-Waste facility.
• Coordinating waste processing, combustion, boiler, steam and turbine operations.
• Monitoring plant performance via the DCS and addressing abnormal conditions.
• Managing start-ups, shutdowns and operational recovery activities.
• Operating permit-to-work and safe systems of work.
• Coordinating maintenance to minimise disruption and losses; ensuring emissions and permit compliance.
• Managing shift resources, training, and succession planning; leading the production shift team.
• Supporting investigations, continuous improvement and operational projects.
• Liaising with maintenance teams, contractors and external service providers.

The Role

This is a hands-on operational management position within a 24-hour process facility. You will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the plant during your shift, coordinating production, plant performance, maintenance support, safety systems, and environmental compliance.

• Taking operational control of the facility during your shift, ensuring the plant remains within safe operating limits while delivering against production and performance targets.
• Managing the safe and efficient operation of the Energy-from-Waste facility.
• Coordinating waste processing, combustion, boiler, steam, and turbine operations.
• Monitoring plant performance using the DCS and responding to abnormal conditions.
• Managing plant start-ups, shutdowns, and operational recovery activities.
• Operating and managing permit-to-work and safe systems of work.
• Coordinating maintenance activity to minimise disruption and operational losses.Ensuring emissions and environmental permit requirements are met.
• Managing shift resources, competence, training, and succession planning.
• Leading, coaching, and developing the production shift team.
• Supporting incident investigations, continuous improvement, and operational projects.
• Liaising with maintenance teams, contractors, and external service providers.
• Maintaining accurate operational records and effective shift handovers.

About You

Direct Energy-from-Waste experience is essential.

• Proven shift-based operational experience within Energy-from-Waste.
• Strong knowledge of waste combustion and incineration systems.
• Experience operating boilers, steam systems, and turbine-generation equipment.
• Experience managing plant through a DCS or control-room environment.
• Previous people-management or operational supervisory responsibility.
• Experience of permit-to-work systems and safe systems of work.
• Strong understanding of emissions control and environmental compliance.
• Ability to manage plant issues calmly and make sound operational decisions.
• At least five years’ relevant operational experience.
• At least two years’ people-management experience.
• An HNC or HND in a technical, engineering, or process-related discipline would be advantageous; significant directly relevant experience will also be considered in place of formal qualifications.
