Job summary

BAE Systems in the United Kingdom seeks an experienced Production Planner to convert customer requirements into production tasks and create a deliverable schedule. You will determine hours, materials and services, coordinating preparation for timely delivery across departments, using ERP systems and MS Excel.

Responsibilities include maintaining project schedules, cost awareness, pre-production checks and mentoring apprentices, with travel to shipyards as needed.

Qualifications

• 5 years refit/installation/repair or planning experience in a shipyard.
• Ability to read technical drawings and customer requirements.
• Proficient with Excel/Access and ERP systems.
• Knowledge of ship repair production processes and safety practices.
• Strong document control and ITAR awareness.
• Willingness to travel for ship visits in UK and abroad.

Job description

To convert customer requirements into production ready tasks, suitable for integration into a deliverable project schedule whilst remaining simple to prepare and deliver.

Use technical knowledge to determine the hours, materials and services required for each task and coordinating the preparation of these in time for delivery, using business systems and processes in a proactive way

Typical duties include :

• Interpret customer requirements to create suitable task list breakdown structures representing current production processes and method, to identify dependencies and carry out any required low level scheduling under the direction of the Senior Production Planner
• Ensure that all work packages identified are completed to the agreed timescale and checks are carried out to maintain quality.
• Liaise with other departments to ensure that all work is complete from a Production Planning perspective, this includes but limited to Procurement and Scheduling.
• Identify the materials, sub-contracts and services required in support of the work and liaise with the supply chain function and review quotes to ensure plans contain an accurate cost and all the work scope is covered.
• Calculate the hours effort for each trade required using production process standards, parametric estimating methods and own knowledge.
• Carry out all pre-production checks to ensure that the tasks can be progress through the ‘Ways of Working’ process flow.
• Rectify identified planning issues that potentially are blocking /delaying commencement of work.
• Help maintain cost estimating and standard job libraries by creating and enhancing standard task lists with parts information in accordance with part creation policy, taking previous feedback and performance history into account.
• Participates in and supports the creation and display performance metrics used to measure planning output; suggesting and promoting potential improvements
• Maintain a close relationship with the production trade heads and subcontractors to ensure that we continuously improve and benchmark our planning and estimating norms.
• Ensuring that any non-conforming product or service discovered during any activity is reported to the appropriate authority.
• Coaching where applicable New Starters/Apprentices
• Deputise for the Senior Production Planner and attend all necessary project/bid meetings.

Knowledge:

• Maintain a close relationship with the Production Planners to ensure that we continuously improve and bench mark our planning and estimating norms .
• Have 5 years refit/installation/repair or planning experience in a shipyard environment ideally in addition to a recognised apprenticeship
• Be able to read and interpret technical drawings/specifications and customer requirements and liaise with customer where necessary to resolve technical issues.
• Train where applicable new starters/Apprentices..
• Keep up-to-date with document control, including ITAR.
• Ensure pre-requisites are advanced to Green, to allow production to deliver, in accordance with schedule
• Develop knowledge of more advanced production planning. Ensure no Lifex materials are released to Production.
• Be PC literate and competent with Microsoft Excel/Access and able to use an ERP system without supervision to undertake the planning role.
• To be able to self-manage to identify and deliver tasks within acceptable time frames with minimal guidance and supervision
• Be able to support other team members and monitor own and team progress against planned delivery and quality targets and to contribute to continuous improvement of the planning function
• Have an understanding and knowledge of ship repair production processes or processes of a similar discipline , methods and safe practices within one or more trade disciplines and the practical implications of product safety assurance.
• Hold awareness of general H&S/Environmental regulations and safe working practices
• Have the ability to carry out ship visits both in the UK and abroad to evaluate customer requirements in more detail
• Have a good knowledge and understanding of Warship Support operations
• Be PC literate and competent with Microsoft Excel/Access and able to use an ERP system without supervision to undertake the planning role.
