Job description

Production Engineer – Mechanical Bias (70/30)
Location: Cullompton | Team: Very small, hands-on | Type: Full-Time | Salary: £35,000-40,000 DOE

Are you the kind of engineer who prefers working closely with one machine at a time, taking ownership end-to-end—rather than being a small cog in a large production hall?

My client is a compact, tightly knit manufacturer near Cullompton, looking for a Production Engineer with a strong mechanical bias (70/30 mechanical/electrical) to join their small, skilled team.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Own the performance, fault-finding, and optimisation of individual machines—one at a time.
  • Carry out hands-on mechanical maintenance, setup, adjustments, and small upgrades.
  • Tackle root-cause analysis when issues arise—you’ll be the go-to person for diagnosing and fixing.
  • Support electrical/control systems at a secondary level (basic PLC interaction, sensors, wiring checks)—no need to be a full electrical specialist.
  • Collaborate with a tight-knit team (2–5 people), sharing ideas and driving improvements in a new facility (so new, it still smells of paint!)
  • Suggest and implement practical changes—your ideas will have direct impact.

About You:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude (machinery, pneumatics, bearings, alignment, etc.)
  • Comfortable with a 70/30 split: mainly mechanical with enough electrical understanding to support diagnostics.
  • Self-motivated and hands-on—used to working in small teams or solo.
  • A natural problem-solver who digs into the “why” and fixes it properly.
  • Experience working on individual machine systems rather than automated production lines is a plus.

Working hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 08:00 – 17:00
  • Friday: 08:30 – 13:00

Preferred:

  • HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical/Production Engineering.
  • Background in small-scale manufacturing or bespoke machine environments.
  • Basic knowledge of PLCs and electrical diagnostics (desirable, not essential).

Why Join My Client:

  • Real autonomy—you work on one machine, see the results, and aren’t lost in layers of process.
  • Small, friendly team where your voice and ideas matter.
  • Enjoy project-style variety—each machine presents a new challenge.
  • Down-to-earth, practical workplace
  • Convenient Cullompton location, with easy access
  • Access to a fantastic healthcare scheme
  • Death in service
  • Day off for your birthday
  • Market leading pension
