Job description

Historic Newspapers is the world's leading publisher of newspaper history books. We sell these books, and our archival original newspapers, through our website at historic-newspapers.com. Historic Newspapers is a sister company to Wonderbly, the world's leading publisher of personalised books, sharing tech, staff, and office space in Bloomsbury, London.

We're seeking an experienced Product Manager to own the Historic Newspapers digital product and drive growth. The role involves collaboration with publishing, commercial, and technology teams.

The primary focus is on product development and conversion optimization for our customised Shopify website. The ideal candidate will have Shopify experience and a background in DTC ecommerce. Responsibilities include managing the development roadmap, liaising with our contract engineering partner, and working with our internal developers. Comfort with all aspects of product management in a small, agile, team is essential.

The role also covers technical systems beyond Shopify, including custom software for newspaper book publishing and tools for managing our archive of over three million newspapers. Product management experience extending beyond Shopify is preferred.

This position reports to the Head of Product at Historic Newspapers and is supported by Wonderbly's product leaders. Currently, it is envisioned as a 3-4 day per week contract until Q1 2026, with flexibility for alternative arrangements including permanent employment.

The team is based in London and Scotland. The role requires at least one day per week in the London office, with potential for up to three days in person.

Requirements
  • Collaborative, articulate, and empathetic team player, comfortable working cross-functionally with developers and marketing colleagues.
  • Numerate and analytical, capable of creating reports and conducting research.
  • Design-aware, understanding the importance of design in product performance, able to sketch wireframes and provide feedback.
  • Experience managing high-quality DTC ecommerce products with £5M+ turnover.
  • Experience working with Shopify, including custom development projects.
  • Experience managing contract and in-house development teams.
  • Passionate about books, publishing, newspapers, or history.
