Job summary

Mechanicaldesigndirectory is seeking a Product Design Engineer to contribute to the development of innovative drug delivery devices in Cambridgeshire. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in product design engineering, proficiency in 3D CAD tools like SolidWorks, and experience in plastic injection moulding.

Your role will involve all stages from initial concept design to prototype development, including close collaboration with suppliers for manufacturing. A minimum of 2 years' experience is required, with medical device experience being a bonus.

Our client is an industry‑leading supplier for the delivery of injectable drug products and point‑of‑care diagnostic consumables, and they are looking to recruit Mechanical Design Engineers. On their behalf we are now looking for innovative Product Design Engineers to join their team. As a Product Design Engineer you will contribute to the development of new drug delivery devices from concept design to prototype development, test & validation through to specification to manufacture.

Key skills will be:

• Strong product design engineering understanding, with the ability to think on your feet.
• Well‑developed 3D CAD skills.
• Strong calculations and significant experience in plastic injection moulding.

What we require of you?

• Contribute to the development of new drug delivery devices, from concept design to ready for clinical trial product.
• Procure prototype parts using appropriate manufacture techniques, such as rapid prototyping and machining.
• Liaise with suppliers, procure tools and commission parts to meet the agreed product / component specification.
• Carry out diligent laboratory testing, including creation of test protocols, designing and procuring test apparatus, analysis of results and report writing.
• Adopt a continuous improvement approach.

What you need?

• A technical relevant degree in Product Design or Design Engineering.
• Deep understanding of manufacture principles for high‑volume consumable products and significant experience in precision injection moulding.
• High familiarity with 3D CAD and associated analysis tools, SolidWorks literate to expert level.
• Experience of visualising new product concepts.
• Experience of engineering analysis and a working knowledge of FMEA and DFMA.
• A minimum of 2 years post graduate experience within product design engineering.
• Design experience from within the medical device field would be an advantage, however is not a pre‑requisite for the Product Design Engineer role; all product design experience is valued.
