Job description

Product Counsel, Data & Search at REFLECTION in London, ENG, GB

This Visa sponsorship job abroad position offers great opportunities for career growth.

Reflection is a research lab making intelligence open and accessible for everyone to use, customize, and build on. We build open models that let anyone control their intelligence and help shape the future of AI. Our mission: make intelligence open and accessible to all.

About the Role

We are seeking a Data Product counsel to lead the legal support for our teams securing and developing data to help power the next generation of frontier AI models and developing agentic search capabilities for our future products. You will work at the frontier of AI law, translating US and international legal regimes and regulations relating to the use of data for different model and product types and building these into actionable product roadmaps. You will also support our teams as they explore the evolution of agentic and search capabilities. You will be a strategic partner to cross-functional teams across a hyper-scaling AI lab, ensuring that our frontier open foundation models have access to essential data whilst being built responsibly. You will advise on US and international AI laws and regulations applicable to both the use of data and agentic frameworks. You will work closely with our product, research, engineering and safety teams as well as other business operations and compliance units to implement measures that ensure our models are responsibly developed. This is a high-impact, build-stage role. You will not simply answer one-off legal questions; you will help design the policies, review processes, escalation pathways, and business-facing guidance that allow Reflection to move quickly while maintaining a mature and defensible compliance posture.

What You’ll Do
  • Act as Reflection’s primary legal contact for our pre-training and data teams, advising on existing and developing laws and regulations that impact the acquisition and utilisation of data for AI training and development across Reflection’s product teams.
  • Act as Reflection’s primary legal contact for agentic and search-based product proposals, advising on this evolving area of law and regulation.
  • Provide focused legal advice relating to legal risks and compliance requirements relating to the use of data for AI training and development, including intellectual property, privacy, licensing and AI regulation.
  • Design and implement data integrity standards and processes to manage risks relating to data use and acquisition.
  • Advise on existing and developing US and international regulations relating to data use and development.
  • Develop policies alongside the data and training teams to ensure Reflection’s models meet data provenance, tracking and usage requirements and standards.
  • Help establish a risk-based compliance posture for AI‑specific data requirements.
  • Partner with cross functional teams to implement data controls that allow for responsible model releases and ensure Reflection addresses current and future data regulations and laws.
  • Advise on data considerations in commercial and strategic transactions including partnerships with customers, data and model collaborations and research partnerships.
  • Help support the building of agentic capabilities and advising the product teams on legal and compliance requirements including intellectual property, safety, security, privacy and AI regulation.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments from Congress, the White House, the EU, UK, and other relevant authorities, and translate those developments into practical guidance for leadership and operators.
What We’re Looking For
  • J.D. and active bar membership (or in-house registration) in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Approximately 10+ years of experience product counselling and advising companies of legal risks in the technology sector, especially in sectors such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, semiconductors, advanced computing, cybersecurity, infrastructure, data centers, or other strategically sensitive technologies.
  • Strong experience identifying and addressing complex legal issues relating to product, regulatory, intellectual property, commerce, privacy, and other legal risks and mitigations.
  • Experience advising on U.S. and International legal, regulatory and litigation matters applicable to AI products and data usage, including advising to address, minimise and avoid regulatory risks.
  • Strong ability to exercise independent judgment and take proactive steps in areas where the law is evolving, agency guidance is incomplete, or the business context does not fit neatly into legacy regulatory categories.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal requirements to engineers, researchers, infrastructure teams, commercial teams, executives, and non‑lawyer operators.
  • Ideally, prior experience at a high‑growth technology company, AI lab, cloud provider or other technology business addressing legal risks associated with the acquisition and use of data.
  • Bonus points for experience with open source access technology.
  • Ideally prior experience addressing issues relating to agentic and/or search capabilities in the context of AI development.
What We Offer
  • Salary and equity structured to recognize and retain our talent globally.
  • Stock options: Everyone who joins and contributes to Reflection's success gets to share in the upside through stock options.
  • Health & wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life, with an annual wellness allowance.
  • Meals: Lunch and dinner are provided in the office daily.
  • Life & family: 22 weeks paid parental leave for all new birthing and non-birthing parents, including adoptive and surrogate journeys.
  • Vacation days: Unlimited paid time off in the U.S. and 30 days in the U.K.
  • Sponsorship support: We sponsor visas to help exceptional talent join our team and support long‑term immigration pathways where applicable.
  • Team building: We have regular off‑sites, happy hours, and team celebrations.
