Procurement Category Manager

Wakefield is situated in West Yorkshire with excellent rail and motorway links to the north and south, including London.

Our district covers 339 square kilometres and is home to around 355,000 people. Almost 70% of the Wakefield district is designated as green belt. The City of Wakefield is the largest settlement, and the district also includes the towns of Normanton, Pontefract, Featherstone, Castleford, Knottingley, Ossett, Horbury, Hemsworth, South Kirkby, and South Elmsall, as well as other smaller settlements.

Our district enjoys several sites of national distinctiveness, including Pontefract Racecourse, Hemsworth Water Park, Sandal Castle, and Nostell Priory. We are also home to the internationally recognized Hepworth Gallery and the National Coal Mining Museum.

We are looking for experienced Procurement Category Managers to join our Corporate Procurement team.
What will be expected from me?

Procurement and Contract Management play a key role in supporting the local economy and helping the Council meet its future challenges. We have exciting opportunities to join our progressive & friendly procurement team here at Wakefield Council.

As a professional procurement category lead, you will provide advice, guidance, and manage end-to-end procurement activities. The portfolio includes Property and Construction, Highways, Transport, Regeneration, and Environmental Services. You will influence procurement solutions that deliver value for money and focus on outcomes that benefit our residents.

With a focus on delivering a best-in-class service, you will develop a category-led approach to procurement, influencing spend, understanding business needs, and developing innovative sourcing opportunities to create a positive legacy within the Council and the community it serves.

What might I be doing?
  • Managing end-to-end procurement activities to establish contracts and arrangements.
  • Maintaining a proactive approach to improve procurement activity within your category of spend.
  • Providing procurement advice and guidance to stakeholders and Council Officers.
Essential requirements:
  • Minimum CIPS Level 4 or demonstrable equivalent experience in procurement/commissioning.
  • Experience in stakeholder management, contract management, and public sector procurement.
  • Attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to develop procurement strategies and solutions.
  • Organizational and planning skills, with the ability to share knowledge at all levels.
  • Excellent communication skills.
