Process Safety Engineer Position

This Process Safety Engineer position is with a globally leading chemical manufacturer based in the Wigan area, specializing in the manufacture of bespoke resins. The role offers an annual salary up to £70,000 (dependent on experience) and a benefits package including a company pension contribution, healthcare (BUPA), 33 days holiday including bank holidays, with working hours from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Purpose of the Role:

The main purpose of the Process Safety Engineer is to provide technical support to ensure the effective implementation of regulatory requirements and risk management procedures, specifically supporting DSEAR & COMAH regulations in the UK.

Responsibilities:

  1. Produce technical deliverables supporting the business, including developing H&S philosophies, design HSE plans, specifications, and equipment specifications.
  2. Chair and participate in formal assessments such as HAZID, HAZOP, and SIL target setting studies, generate reports, and manage actions, leading HAZID and SIL studies.
  3. Participate in project design assurance reviews, including P&ID and constructability reviews.
  4. Responsible for hazardous area classification following industry codes and guidance, and develop and implement functional HSE management plans.
  5. Produce and review specifications, data sheets, schedules, study reports, and design calculations, ensuring quality and compliance with management systems.
  6. Provide technical support to projects and sites, adhering to procedures and contributing to continuous improvement.
  7. Maintain awareness of relevant regulatory frameworks, legislative changes, initiatives, and technological developments.
  8. Possess thorough knowledge of environmental methodologies, software systems, and design practices related to FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and start-up, with awareness of international codes and standards.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Degree qualified in a relevant Engineering or Chemical discipline.
  • Chartered status is highly beneficial.
  • Strong experience in relevant roles within the chemical manufacturing industry.
  • Knowledge of COMAH, DSEAR, risk assessment techniques, and H&S legislation.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing improvement strategies such as Six Sigma, Lean, FMEA, etc.
