Job description

Acorn by Synergie is searching for a Process Safety Engineer for our client, a chemical manufacturer and distributor based in Middlesbrough.

With a strong background in process safety and compliance within the chemical or related industry, the purpose of the role is to support the SHE team in process safety compliance, while contributing to engineering projects and ensuring safe and compliant operations across the company.

The role requires travel to other UK sites. Salary on offer is dependent on knowledge and experience to offer.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining high process safety standards across the multi site operations, providing support to the Group SHE Manager on regulatory compliance matters, particularly those related to COMAH.
  • Working with the Group SHE Manager to support communication and interactions with regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure the timely completion of actions arising from regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Lead process safety reviews and assessments such as HAZOP, LOPA, and functional safety assessments in collaboration with the engineering and SHE teams.
  • Ensure that safety management systems are implemented and maintained.
  • Ensure that process safety systems, including Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), comply with BS EN 61508 and other relevant standards.
  • Lead process safety improvement initiatives across multiple sites, ensuring safe design and operation of equipment. Work on cross-functional projects to improve safety while enhancing operational efficiency.

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical or related engineering discipline.
  • Have at least 5 years of post-graduate experience in process safety, ideally within the chemical sector or another industry with stringent safety requirements i.e. personal care, food.
  • Demonstrable experience with HAZOP, LOPA, PHR, and knowledge of COMAH regulations.
  • Experience with BS EN 61508 and related safety standards.
