Job summary

A&B Smart Materials, an Oxford University–based materials science venture, is hiring its first process engineer. You will take a lab‑scale SAP formulation and scale it to pilot and beyond, working directly with the CEO and CTO.

You’ll manage techno‑economic modelling, raw material sourcing, and process safety while guiding a path to industrial production. You will also lead technology transfer, engage toll manufacturers, and help specify pilot and production equipment.

Qualifications

• Experience taking chemical processes from lab to industrial production.
• Degree in chemical engineering, chemistry or related field.
• Comfortable in hands‑on lab work and pilot plant settings.

Responsibilities

• Own techno‑economic analysis and cost modeling across scale‑up.
• Own raw material sourcing and supplier identification for grades and costs.
• Run and optimize pilot‑scale batches and document operating windows.
• Assess scale‑up risks and propose alternative routes early.
• Develop specifications and quality controls for industrial use.
• Ensure process safety and COSHH compliance in pilot operations.
• Lead tech transfer and select toll manufacturers for scale‑up.
• Support commercial discussions with technical insights on manufacturability.
