Job description

For candidates seeking to be located at our Stevenage site, this role will temporarily be based at Stevenage. However, the Company plans to relocate its offices to Ware. The location of this role will therefore subsequently change to Ware in accordance with timelines to be set by the Company. The relocation is currently proposed to take effect by early 2029.

As a member of DSD, you will apply your engineering knowledge to develop and deploy state-of-the‑art processes and technologies that support the development and delivery of GSK medicines.

This is a practical role based in R&D laboratories, where you will work alongside chemists and material scientists to build the process understanding needed for successful scale-up and commercial industrialisation of future GSK manufacturing processes.

You will combine digital, data and analytics (DDA) information from laboratory studies with engineering principles, process simulation and modelling to develop robust, scalable and sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. As processes transfer to pilot-plant facilities for clinical-trial delivery or to manufacturing facilities for commercialisation, you will provide global support as the engineering technical expert.

The work will focus primarily on chemistry-based small molecules and oligonucleotides, with potential involvement in biochemistry-based large molecules, vaccines and antibody‑drug conjugates.

Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct scale‑up and scale‑down experiments across chemical engineering unit operations, building process understanding within fast‑paced project timelines.
  • Think creatively to optimise engineering solutions and de‑risk scale‑up processes.
  • Analyse experimental results and communicate conclusions and recommendations clearly at internal R&D meetings.
  • Contribute to technology‑transfer activities with GSK manufacturing partners, providing engineering input appropriate to the project stage.
  • Use digital data and analytics alongside engineering expertise to predict and inform process‑development decisions and manage scale‑up risk.
  • Author or contribute to internal documentation relevant to the role.
  • Comply with applicable Data Integrity, Quality, cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) and regulatory requirements in all aspects of work and fully embrace all aspects of safety when working in the laboratory.
Required Skills
  • BSc/BEng/Masters / PhD (or equivalent) in Process/Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience working in a plant and/or direct laboratory experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or related sector.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
  • Practical familiarity with process simulation/modelling techniques such as DynoChem and similar software.
  • Experience collecting and interpreting digital process data, including through Process Analytical Technology (PAT), and using analytics to support timely decision‑making.
  • Experience working effectively in a cross‑functional scientific or engineering team.
  • Asset Life Cycle Management, Data Integrity, Digital Fluency, GxP Regulations, Lean Management, Manufacturing Technologies, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Problem Solving, Risk Awareness, Standards Compliance.
