Overview

Process Engineer/Analyst - Generation, Renewables, & Gas (Birmingham or Atlanta)

Environmental Solutions in Technical Shared Services in Southern Company is seeking candidates for the position of Process Engineer. This role provides corporate engineering support for Southern Company's power generation fleet, with a mix of field and office work supporting projects in electric generating plants, including water treatment, wastewater treatment, air emissions control, and other chemical processes.

Work Location
  • This position is flexible to be located in either Alabama (Birmingham) or Georgia (Atlanta).
  • This position requires travel (up to 50%), including day trips and overnight travel (some air travel).
  • Mix of field and office work required.
  • Some relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate resides outside the Birmingham or Atlanta area.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide corporate support for wastewater and ash systems across the Southern Company System.
  • Develop and review design basis documentation and technical specifications.
  • Review engineered drawings to ensure compliance with company specifications and guidelines as well as pertinent codes and regulations.
  • Troubleshoot plant processes across the fleet and analyze data for process improvements.
  • Design and execute pilot programs and/or testing for future plants and environmental compliance.
  • Support research and development with pilot programs.
  • Effectively communicate complex topics to various working groups both internal and external to Southern Company.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders across Southern Company.
Position Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required. BS Engineering preferred (Chemical engineering preferred). Other degrees (e.g., chemistry or biology) may be considered with relevant operations experience.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience in heavy industrial processes (e.g., power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline). Operations experience in a plant environment preferred. Optimization and complex troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical processes preferred. Previous project management experience highly desired.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of fossil-fueled combustion systems and pollutant emission control systems; strong analytical ability for problem solving; ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines; strong oral and written communication; strong presentation skills; proficiency with Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, and PowerApps is a plus; familiarity with process safety and inherently safe design principles.
