Reporting to: Process Engineering Manager (Mkango Rare Earths UK Limited)

Mkango is a TSXV and AIM listed company focused on development of a rare earths mining and processing project in Malawi, a rare earths separation plant in Poland and development of a recycling manufacturing base in the UK, EU and the USA to process and recycle rare earth magnets, via its interest in HyProMag Limited.

The Opportunity

Applications are invited for a highly motivated Process Engineer to support the development of new and innovative rare earths chemical processing projects, starting as soon as possible . The new hire will be an integral part of the development and optimisation of a hydrometallurgical pilot facility that is operational within Tyseley Energy Park, Birmingham UK.

The plant is designed to extract and separate valuable rare earths. Experience working in the field of hydrometallurgy and an understanding of mixer-settler unit operation is highly advantageous for this role.

The successful candidate should have experience working competently and safely within a plant environment and possess good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work efficiently both as part of a team and independently.

This is a brilliant opportunity for a Process Engineer to acquire valuable industrial experience within a fast-growing rare earths mining and processing company.

Key responsibilities include

Develop key process engineering documentation such as Block Flow diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and material/heat balances.

Undertake process development and improvement projects, refining process information, plant documentation, risk assessments, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Actively participate in safety studies such as Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP) and Layer of Protection analysis (LOPA).

Provide process engineering input for large capital projects.

Supporting pilot plant operation, development, and optimisation. Troubleshooting and adjusting process parameters to maximise yield and product purity, ensuring safety standards are adhered to in the pilot plant.

Gathering, analysing and interpreting process data to continuously improve yield and purity.

Identifying and troubleshooting process issues during pilot trial runs

Supervising and ensuring the correct operation of process equipment, liaising with equipment manufacturers to maintain the functionality of process equipment.

Proactively identifying opportunities for improvement, addressing risks, and documenting actions as part of the internal audit requirements, driving corrective actions.

The Process Engineer will be/have:

Experience working in Hydrometallurgy with a strong understanding of hydrometallurgy process engineering unit operations such as milling, leaching, precipitation, filtration, and liquid-liquid extraction.

MEng Chemical Engineering Degree – Ideally with one year’s industrial experience

Experience of performing process calculations, equipment sizing and development of P&IDs.

Experience of working in a manufacturing environment would be advantageous. Specifically, regarding the development of technologies from Pilot to Demonstration scale.

A self-motivated, proactive individual with high achievement drive and initiative, excellent verbal, and written communication skills, as well as time management skills.

Superb attention to detail and a logical problem solver.

Strong IT skills with experience in Office suite – Specific focus on the ability to manipulate data in Excel.

Hands-on experience working with hazardous chemicals and operating plant equipment.

Experience with process simulation software ASPEN, MATLAB or METSIM would also be beneficial.

Ability to speak French or Polish would be advantageous.

Full rights to work in the UK and flexible to travel internationally for short time periods, specifically to Poland, South Africa and Malawi.

·Familiarity with process instrumentation theory and strong level of understanding of control systems.

·Knowledge of fractional solvent extraction (Liquid-Liquid Extraction unit operations)

·Experience of analytical techniques for material characterization – ICP-OES, XRR, UV-vis etc.

·Experience using process modelling software – HYSYS, Metsim.

·In-depth proficiency with Microsoft Visio and Auto CAD

·General Process Engineering “Hands on” experience - experience replacing pipework, fittings, valves etc.

·Full UK Driving license.
