Job description

Job Description

We are looking for a Process Development Engineer / Scientist who can make a key contribution to commercialising cultivated meat.

Introduction

Welcome to Meatly. We are on a mission to create sustainable, healthy, and kind cultivated meat, and prove there is a fast and efficient way to commercialise it. Meatly is the first company in Europe to ever sell cultivated meat. We did this with a team of ten and spent 10- 100x less than other approved cultivated meat companies. We are inventing, patenting, and publishing new industry-leading cultivated methods, and we’re now excited to be adding to our pioneering team.

We are an ambitious and purpose-driven start-up. We act in a way that represents the world we want to live in – equal, fair, sustainable and prosperous. We are proactively seeking candidates who think differently and want to have an impact. We hire passionate, exceptional people and empower them with mutual trust, respect, and the freedom to excel.

Our initial market focus is pet food, after which we will create products for human food. Pet food is responsible for 25–30% of the environmental impact of animal agriculture. We will soon create our own production facility using our industry-leading technology to begin mass producing Meatly Chicken.

We are looking for a Process Development Engineer/Scientist who will be responsible for developing and optimising the production bioprocess for cultured meat to help create market-leading pet food.

The role

You will be a key member of the R&D Team. The full-time position will be based in our lab in London, UK.

We’re looking for someone who is excited about the challenge, thinks big, acts bravely and challenges norms for the better. Creativity and a strong learning and can do attitude will be essential.

Compensation is highly competitive and will include participation in the company’s share option scheme.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and analyse experiments to develop a scalable manufacturing process
  • Identify and implement relevant in-process analytics to optimise production of animal cells
  • Work closely with team members to maintain project development, implementation and troubleshooting of experiments, and ensure deliverables are met
  • Attend and present at team meetings to share results, and plan experiments, with a keen eye for achieving company milestones
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including all those associated with facilitating the smooth operation in the lab
  • Maintain standards consistent with company culture and values

Who you are

  • Masters or PhD in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Animal cell culture in different bioreactor types and operating modes (must have)
  • Developing and scaling up processes involving animal cells (must have)
  • Cell metabolism characterization and modification (good to have)
  • Serum-free medium culture systems (good to have)
  • Development of toxic by-product elimination systems and medium recycling (good to have)

Additional requirements:

  • Action oriented, results driven, and able to accomplish project objectives and meet or exceed expectations
  • Attention to detail and ability to work both individually and within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Exceptional communication, writing, organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, with excellent PowerPoint and Excel skills
