Job summary

Technical Partners is seeking a Process Control & Automation Inspector to join our Port Talbot operation in South Wales. You will diagnose faults on PLC-controlled systems, maintain automation equipment, and support plant reliability in a highly automated manufacturing environment.

The role requires an engineering apprenticeship and NVQ Level 3 in electrical engineering, with strong fault-finding and communication skills. Overtime is possible during shutdowns and peak periods.

Qualifications

  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship completed.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
  • Good understanding of electrical systems, motors, drives and control equipment.
  • Commitment to health, safety and engineering best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and rectify faults on PLC-controlled systems and instrumentation.
  • Maintain and support control, automation, and instrumentation equipment across site.
  • Fault find on AC/DC drives, motors and electrical control systems.
  • Support planned maintenance and breakdown activities to minimise downtime.
  • Issue electrical permits when authorised and ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Respond to engineering, operational, quality and safety issues.
  • Contribute to continual improvement to increase plant reliability.
  • Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to meet maintenance objectives.
  • Support plant upgrades and engineering projects as required.
  • Undertake overtime during planned shutdowns and breakdowns.

We are seeking a skilled Process Control & Automation (PC&A) Inspector to join a leading manufacturing operation in Port Talbot. This is an exciting opportunity for an electrically biased engineering professional to play a key role in maintaining and improving the performance of highly automated production equipment within a fast-paced industrial environment.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you’ll be responsible for fault diagnosis, inspection, maintenance, and continuous improvement activities across electrical, automation, control, and instrumentation systems. You will act as a key point of contact in ensuring plant reliability, efficiency, and operational performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and rectify faults on PLC-controlled systems and plant instrumentation.
  • Maintain and support control, automation, and instrumentation equipment across site.
  • Fault find on AC/DC drives, motors, and electrical control systems.
  • Support planned maintenance and breakdown activities to minimise production downtime.

Candidate Requirements
Essential
  • Completed a recognised Engineering Apprenticeship.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience working within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Good understanding of electrical systems, motors, drives, and control equipment.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, and engineering best practices.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Desirable
  • PLC programming and fault-finding experience.
  • Instrumentation and control systems experience.
  • HMI development knowledge.
  • Industrial network communication experience.
  • Low Voltage Authorisation.
  • AC and DC drive systems experience.
  • Experience working with furnace systems, gas systems, or heavy industrial processes.

Hot Rolled Products Port Talbot is the UK's leading supplier of Hot rolled coil, with up to 83,000 Tonnes of slab a week, processed to various thickness and grades for hundreds of different customers all over the world. Steel slab is reduced to coil and either sent direct to customers or for downstream processing through a highly complex and high speed rolling mill.

You will be working within the Hot Rolled Products area, providing a complete range of Engineering activities to optimise production in the area.
