About us

Are you committed to helping people stay in their homes and avoid homelessness? We are seeking a dedicated Private Rented Sector Support Officer to join our Housing Needs Team and play a key role in sustaining tenancies and preventing evictions across the private sector.

The Housing Needs Team (currently known as Homelessness & Housing Advice) plays a vital role in preventing homelessness across the borough. The team provides comprehensive housing advice and support to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. This includes assessing statutory duties under homelessness legislation, developing personalised housing plans, and working collaboratively with internal services and external partners to secure sustainable housing solutions. The team is committed to early intervention, person-centred support, and reducing the use of temporary/emergency accommodation through proactive prevention and move-on strategies.

The role

This is a frontline position, focussing on supporting individuals and families living in private rented accommodation. You’ll work closely with clients who are already living in private sector accommodation, or those that are placed within the sector through the newly created PRS Access Scheme. You will help them to maintain stable tenancies, resolve housing issues, and access the support they need to avoid evictions.

This role will work closely with the Private Rented Sector Access Officer and the Emergency Placement and Move-on Coordinator.

You will.

  • Provide proactive tenancy sustainment support to clients in the private rented sector.
  • Identify risks of eviction early and intervene with practical solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with landlords, support services and internal teams to resolve housing issues.
  • Help clients access benefits, employment, health services, and other support networks.
  • Maintain accurate records and follow council procedures to ensure consistent delivery.
  • Participate in the Emergency Out of Hours Service (phone based).
What's needed?
  • Experience supporting vulnerable individuals or working in housing or tenancy sustainment, ideally within homelessness.
  • A good understanding of the welfare system.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload.
  • Knowledge of housing/homelessness legislation and prevention strategies.
  • A commitment to improving outcomes for residents at risk of losing their homes.

Key Dates & Further Information

The role is full-time, working 37 hours per week. This role is eligible for flexible working; however, the core operating hours are Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm.

The role is fixed term for 12 months, from the appointment date with the possibility of an extension dependent upon future funding.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
