Job description

Job Role: Officer Support Group (OSG)

As an OSG, you will work a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights, to ensure operational continuity. This unique career offers you the opportunity to protect the public and make a positive impact by supporting daily prison operations. Unlike prison officers, your contact with prisoners will be limited, although some interaction may occur depending on the specific prison.

The OSG role provides significant knowledge and experience of prison operations and can serve as a stepping stone to other prison roles, including opportunities to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Travel and Location

Some prisons are located in rural areas with limited public transport. A driving licence and personal transport are beneficial but not always essential unless specified. Please consider the location and your transport options carefully.

Note: Shift start and finish times are fixed. It is your responsibility to arrive on time for your shifts.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 Vehicle Category, which allows you to drive vehicles with:

  • No more than 16 passenger seats
  • A maximum length of 8 metres
  • A trailer up to 750kg

No formal qualifications are required for this role. Success in this position depends on being a good communicator, maintaining composure under pressure, having good judgment and common sense, and being a team player.

Benefits
  • 25 days of annual leave on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years (pro-rata)
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
  • Access to a Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Participation in the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme
