Job description

Our client, one of the UK's leading infrastructure companies, is looking to recruit a Principal Design Engineer.

The main function of the role is to lead the HV Primary Engineering design delivery for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV, with the assistance of Design Engineers.

Additionally, the Principal Plant Engineer will assist the Design Delivery Managers in the day-to-day operations of the engineering and technician teams.

The role includes leading the team in planning and procurement responsibilities for substation project delivery, including:

1. Leading the design team to deliver designs that meet customer specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant national and international standards and legislation.
2. Checking and approving HV plant design deliverables such as single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design/calculations, etc.
3. Undertaking TP137 / SR 188 Contractors Design Approval Engineers (CDAE) and Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE) roles for National Grid projects.
4. Leading design work with regard to health and safety procedures and company obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations, advising on risks and mitigation measures to the Engineering Manager.
5. Ensuring all models and drawings undergo proper review and approval, including those from suppliers and subcontractors, with an emphasis on BIM best practices.
6. Leading the technical direction of the engineering team, incorporating industry best practices and developments into engineering methodology.

We are looking for candidates with:

Education & Qualifications:

• Graduate in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered engineer or working towards it.
• Member of IET (MIET).

Experience:

• Experience in a design office environment over 10 years.
• Liaising with customers and suppliers.
• Proficiency in calculations demonstrating design integrity.
• Design and specification of electrical power systems and components.
• Experience as a senior HV Substation Primary Plant Design Engineer.
• Basic understanding of P&C aspects (preferable).
• TP141 HV Substation qualification (advantageous).
• Proven experience with HV substation equipment such as HV plant and transformers.
• BIM 360 experience and knowledge.
