Job Description:

As we move into AMP 8 and continue with our growth plans across the UK & Ireland, we're interested in hearing expressions of interest from Water Resource Consultants seeking their next career opportunity in the coming weeks and months.

Find your focus, grow with us, and be part of the solution to future water challenges. How will you make a difference?

Recognize the vital role water plays in health, environment, and economy? Aware of the challenges in providing water amid changing climate, sustainability standards, and population growth? If you want to be part of a team at the forefront of building resilient and sustainable water supply solutions for the UK and internationally, we want to hear from you!

Stantec is a top-tier global consultancy, named the ‘Best Place to Work’ at the 2024 New Civil Engineer (NCE) Awards. We are known for innovative water supply solutions, environmental and regulatory services for public and private clients in the UK. With ambitious growth targets in water resources planning, we seek experienced professionals (5-10 years in the water industry) to play key roles in our projects.

Opportunities are available to join our water resources planning team at locations across the UK (including Birmingham, Redditch, High Wycombe, Reading, and Shrewsbury), with potential for collaboration on global Stantec projects.

About this opportunity

This is an exciting time for water resources in the UK. The regulator Ofwat has announced the largest infrastructure investment since privatization, with £4 billion for water supply and £2 billion for nature-based solutions in the 2025-30 period. This includes funding for resilience, security of supply, leakage reduction, and smart meter programs.

Since 2020, our engagement in water resources planning has expanded, including work on Strategic Resource Options, Water Resource Management Plans, Drought Plans, and WINEP investigations. Supporting water companies in delivering AMP8 schemes and future planning remains a focus for us in 2024 and beyond.

Our team collaborates with water companies, regulators (e.g., Environment Agency, Ofwat), engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to achieve positive project outcomes.

As a senior team member, you will:

  • Manage full project lifecycles from inception to handover, ensuring scope, budget, schedule, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead by example, mentor junior staff, and review their work.
  • Bring extensive experience in developing WRMPs, Regional Plans, Drought Plans, water resource models, demand management, options appraisal, and environmental assessments.
  • Support wider team efforts, contribute to various projects, and leverage networks for project success.
  • Manage commercial aspects, bids, and proposals, providing strategic insights for AMP8.
About you

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds (regulatory, water company, consultancy) with recent experience in water resources policy and technical areas. You should be comfortable working in fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams, engaging with clients, authorities, and stakeholders. Previous involvement in WRMPs, regional plans, SROs, or Drought Plans is desirable.

We are looking for:

  • Extensive experience in leading assessment and development of WRMPs, drought and regional plans, water demand modeling, and risk assessments.
  • Experience with WINEP investigations, environmental assessments, licensing, catchment management, climate change impact studies, and options appraisal.
  • Understanding of UK Water Resources Management regulatory requirements.
  • Project management skills, including leading large or complex projects.
  • Strong client relationship skills.
  • A relevant degree (geography, geology, environmental science, civil engineering, water resources), preferably with postgraduate qualifications and professional chartership (CIWEM, ICE, Institute of Water).
