Job Title: Associate / Principal Urban Designer

Location: London or Birmingham

Overview:

A leading multidisciplinary consultancy is seeking experienced Associate and Principal Urban Designers to join its national development and regeneration team. Operating from central offices in London or Birmingham, the successful candidates will contribute to a range of masterplanning and urban design projects across the UK. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-profile, strategic developments that have a lasting impact on communities, while collaborating with experts across planning, transport, landscape, and environmental disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Lead and support the design and delivery of urban design and masterplanning projects, ensuring high-quality outputs.
  2. Contribute to the preparation of strategic spatial plans, urban regeneration frameworks, and redevelopment assessments.
  3. Collaborate with internal multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders, including clients and technical consultants.
  4. Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively, ensuring timely and cost-efficient delivery.
  5. Produce and present compelling design concepts, reports, and bid documentation.
  6. Support business development activities, including client engagement, proposals, and tenders.
  7. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members and contribute to team growth and reputation.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
  1. Master’s degree in Urban Design, Urban Regeneration, or Urban Development.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a design-related discipline.
  3. Demonstrable experience in areas such as:
  • UK residential masterplanning
  • Industrial masterplanning
  • Strategic and regional spatial planning
  • Urban regeneration strategies
  • Urban design frameworks
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a range of projects at varying scales.
  • Technical & Software Skills:
    • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
    • Competent in AutoCAD and 3D modelling software (Revit, Rhino, SketchUp).
    • Working knowledge of GIS is desirable.

    • Creative thinker with a strong interest in placemaking and town centre regeneration.
    • Comprehensive understanding of UK planning policies, design principles, and sustainability agendas.
    • Ability to integrate social value, socio-economic insights, and environmental considerations into design work.
    • Effective communicator with experience in public consultation and stakeholder engagement.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, managing workload and contributing to team leadership.
    • Strong graphical and presentation skills, including hand-drawing where appropriate.
