Following internal promotions, we are seeking talented and passionate urban designers to join our award-winning Built and Natural Environment Team. This multidisciplinary team includes Urban Designers, Heritage Specialists, Ecologists, Landscape Designers, and Arboriculturists working within the Greater Cambridge Planning Service, a shared service between Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.
This is an exciting opportunity for experienced practitioners to establish their careers in a high-profile growth area. South Cambridgeshire District Council is renowned for the quality of its new developments.
The successful candidates will play a vital role in influencing high-quality design outcomes in one of the UK's most historic cities and a rapidly growing economy.
Projects include city extensions such as Marleigh and Springstead Village, redevelopment of city centre sites, creation of new towns at Northstowe and Waterbeach, development of employment sites on Science and Research Parks, and residential schemes in sensitive village locations.
The team actively collaborates with communities and businesses, participates in policy formulation (e.g., The Greater Cambridge Joint Local Plan), and contributes to the production and implementation of design codes (e.g., The National Design Code Pathfinder Pilot) and guidance.
You will work on diverse projects, including pre-application and application advice on schemes of varying complexities, developing design codes, assisting with the Greater Cambridge Design Review Panel, advising on strategic sites, contributing to the Greater Cambridge Local Plan, mentoring colleagues, and delivering client services.
Applicants should have at least 4 years of urban design experience on complex projects, including small and large-scale applications in urban and rural settings, producing and advising on urban design strategies, masterplans, and design codes independently.
What matters most is an excellent understanding of urban design issues; being solution-focused, passionate about placemaking; effective negotiation skills; keen attention to detail; and a collaborative approach to achieving excellent outcomes.
You should be a great communicator, capable of providing urban design guidance through verbal, written, and drawing skills across various projects, and able to manage competing priorities. Willingness to travel around the Greater Cambridge area for site visits and meetings is required.
Applicants must hold a postgraduate qualification in Urban Design and a first degree in architecture, landscape, or planning. Eligibility for or progress towards full membership of a relevant professional body (RIBA, RTPI, UDG, or equivalent) is also necessary.
If you are driven to meet the challenges of our busy Shared Planning Service, this is an excellent opportunity to further your career!
