Overview

Join a high-performing Midlands transport team where your expertise in traffic signal design will shape real-world infrastructure across the UK. Purpose & Scope of the Role: As a Principal Traffic Signals Engineer, you will take a leading role in delivering high-quality traffic signal design and assessment projects to current UK standards. Working within a collaborative team, you will combine technical delivery with project management, client engagement and team development. The role covers junction design using AutoCAD, capacity modelling with LinSig and TRANSYT, and the preparation of detailed reports and specifications. You will be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, on time and within budget, while maintaining compliance with quality assurance processes.

Responsibilities
  • Technical Expertise - Deliver robust traffic signal designs using AutoCAD, LinSig and TRANSYT; apply UK design standards and modelling best practice to produce efficient solutions
  • Project & Commercial Management - Lead projects from inception to delivery, managing scope, budget and programme; support fee proposals and contribute to business development activities
  • Client Engagement & Communication - Build and maintain strong client relationships across public and private sectors; communicate technical information clearly through reports, drawings and meetings
  • Data Analysis & Problem Solving - Analyse and interpret transport data to inform design decisions; produce accurate, concise and technically sound outputs
  • Leadership & Team Development - Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering professional growth; collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver shared objectives
Qualifications

You will have proven experience in UK traffic signal design, with strong knowledge of relevant standards and modelling tools such as LinSig and TRANSYT. Proficiency in AutoCAD and experience in data analysis, reporting and client-facing roles are essential. A relevant degree and professional membership are advantageous, alongside experience with MOVA, ITS technologies or micro-simulation tools such as VISSIM or PARAMIC. A full UK driving licence is required.

Working Environment

This role is based in Leicester within a flexible hybrid working model. You will collaborate with colleagues across the Midlands and UK, with occasional travel for site visits and client meetings.
