Job description

Principal Structural Engineer
Sheffield

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you'll lead the design and delivery of complex building structures across a variety of sectors - from high-rise developments to education, residential, and mixed-use schemes. You'll manage multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior engineers and technicians, and act as the main point of contact for clients, ensuring successful project delivery from concept through to completion.

You'll also have the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of the business, support bids and proposals, and play a key role in maintaining strong client relationships and repeat business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead structural design projects in steel, concrete, timber, and masonry from feasibility through to construction.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers and technicians.
  • Manage project resources, budgets, and delivery programmes.
  • Liaise closely with clients, architects, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee high-quality reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations.
  • Contribute to business development and bid preparation.
  • Support internal quality, technical review, and continuous improvement initiatives.

About You

  • BEng/MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with ICE or IStructE.
  • Proven experience delivering medium to large-scale building projects.
  • Strong technical understanding of UK design codes, building regulations, and modern construction techniques.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and client-facing skills.
  • Proficiency with design software such as Tekla Structural Designer, ETABS, Robot, TEDDS, or similar.
  • Commercially aware with good project management experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience within the concrete frame, PBSA, or Build to Rent sectors.
  • Knowledge of BIM workflows and Revit integration.
  • Involvement in business development or industry committees/publications.
