Job description

Are you an experienced Principal Structural Engineer looking for your next challenge? Would you like to play a leading role in delivering some of the world's most exciting and complex projects while joining a dynamic, growing team at the forefront of sustainable design? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you'll take a leading role in the delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects across sectors including commercial, residential, education, healthcare and mixed-use developments. Working as part of our multidisciplinary London team, you'll provide technical leadership from project inception through to completion, ensuring innovative, efficient and sustainable structural solutions are delivered to the highest standards.

You'll be responsible for leading the structural design and analysis of building projects, overseeing project delivery, and ensuring quality, programme and commercial objectives are achieved. You'll produce and review detailed calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports, while providing guidance and technical assurance to the wider team.

Working collaboratively with architects, clients, contractors and fellow engineering disciplines, you'll develop integrated design solutions that balance technical excellence with practical delivery. You'll build and maintain strong client relationships, attend project and design team meetings, and represent Waterman with professionalism throughout the project lifecycle.

As a senior member of the team, you'll play an important role in mentoring and developing Graduate, Engineer and Senior Engineer colleagues. You'll review technical work, provide coaching and support professional development, helping to foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

This is an exciting time to join Waterman as we continue to deliver innovative, sustainable engineering solutions that support the transition to a net zero built environment. You'll have the opportunity to work alongside experts from across the business, contribute to high-profile projects and play an active role in the continued growth of our London Structures team.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about structural engineering, enjoys solving technically challenging problems and is keen to make a meaningful contribution to both our projects and our people.

Although we're happy to consider applicants with varying levels of experience, you'll ideally have qualifications, experience or skills in the following areas:

  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status (MIStructE or MICE).
  • Significant experience delivering structural engineering projects within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge across a range of structural materials, including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent understanding of CDM Regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes.
  • Strong client-facing skills with the ability to develop and maintain long-term relationships.
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical designs, calculations and reports.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Strong planning, organisational and commercial awareness, with the ability to manage project budgets, resources and programmes effectively.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach and a passion for delivering sustainable engineering solutions.

Joining our team will give you:

  • Competitive salary and benefits package with annual salary reviews.
  • 26 days' holiday per year, rising to 31 days with loyalty days, plus bank holidays.
  • Hybrid working arrangements.
  • Fantastic training and development culture.
  • Access to mentoring support from industry experts.
  • Opportunity to lead the delivery of exciting and varied projects across multiple sectors.
  • Opportunity to build strong client relationships and contribute to business development activities.
  • Fast-tracked career progression for the right candidates.
