About the role

Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Principal Structural/Civil Designer to join the Power Transmission and Distribution Team in Derby.

Role focus will be:

  1. Take responsibility for the design delivery and suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects, with a focus on Overhead Line (OHL) foundations and geotechnical delivery.
  2. Collaborate with project teams, designers, and subcontractors during the design phase to deliver safe and appropriate scope of works aligned with project objectives.
  3. Advise on the constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works for Power T&D.
  4. Provide geotechnical support across PT&D workstreams.
  5. Engage in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects with the Team Lead and Design Delivery Manager.

What you'll be doing

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Lead and manage a section of the Geotechnical and OHL foundation design team.
  2. Design and coordinate foundation and geotechnical designs for OHL, Cabling, and Substation projects from feasibility to detail design and installation, supporting temporary works design where necessary.
  3. Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of designs, complying with client and national standards (BS, Eurocodes, ENA).
  4. Understand and incorporate client requirements, including unstated needs, into design solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements, including:

  • Promote a Safety by Design approach.
  • Lead civil project designs such as reinforced concrete, ground risk assessments, tower capacity, site design, slope stability, and geotechnical management.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and legal standards.
  • Conduct technical quality reviews and approve designs as permitted.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Assist in tender processes, scope interpretation, and advice provision.
  • Embed safety principles in all activities, minimizing risks to personnel and property.
  • Guide and upskill team members, develop policies and procedures for continuous improvement.
  • Support engineering design delivery, software use, and development of design aids.
  • Manage the output and delivery of design drawings.
  • Contribute to defining team objectives and strategy.

Who we're looking for

Skills Required:

  • Management skills
  • Degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or equivalent; Chartered Engineer preferred (ICE or IStruct).
  • Post-graduate civil engineering experience.
  • Experience supervising sub-consultants/subcontractors.
  • Proven civil engineering design experience.
  • Experience managing civil or geotechnical design projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CAD.
  • Extensive geotechnical design experience.
  • Expertise in Tekla Tedds.
  • Good knowledge of Eurocode and British standards.
