What does the role look like?

The Principal Stress Engineer is a senior technical position based at our Wolverhampton site within the Global Defence Systems value stream. You will be responsible for performing both preliminary and detailed structural and vibration analyses to support the design and development of actuation systems (including hydraulic, geared, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems). The role covers the entire product lifecycle—from conceptual design and prototyping through to manufacturing, integration, and production support. Additionally, you will be expected to lead and mentor teams, manage analysis workloads, and serve as the primary technical authority in stress engineering across multidisciplinary projects.

There is also potential for hybrid or remote working arrangements for suitable candidates, which can be further discussed during the interview process.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?
  • Technical Analysis:
    • Conduct preliminary sizing and detailed structural and vibration analysis.
    • Utilise both classical and computational methods to assess mechanical elements such as gears, splines, bearings, and rotary actuators.
    • Apply structural FEA (including linear, contact, dynamic, and non-linear analyses) and vibration analysis to ensure component integrity.
  • Reporting & Communication:
    • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and present findings to both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Clearly communicate complex technical issues, ensuring understanding across diverse audiences.
  • Leadership & Collaboration:
    • Plan and manage the engineering analysis workload, ensuring alignment with project timelines and business objectives.
    • Mentor and develop early career engineers within the stress discipline.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate stress engineering solutions throughout the product development lifecycle.
What will you bring to the role?

Essential skills:

Advanced Understanding of Classical Analysis Methods:
  • Expertise in analysing gears, splines, bearings, rotary actuators, gearboxes, and other mechanical components.
  • Proficiency in classical stress methods, including strength of materials, static and fatigue strength calculations, and load rationalisation.
Ability to Derive Margins of Safety and Damages with Confidence:
  • Proven competency in assessing structural integrity and accurately determining margins of safety and potential damage scenarios.
Proven Problem Solving in Structural Analysis Environments:
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnosing and solving complex issues within stress engineering contexts.
Desirable skills:

Industry-Specific Experience:
  • Experience within aerospace or related defence sectors is beneficial, though candidates with transferable skills from other precision engineering fields are also welcome.
Technical Tool Proficiency:
  • Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Abaqus, MathCAD, and CATIA.
Effective Communication and Reporting:
  • Experience in preparing technical documentation and presenting complex analyses in a clear, concise manner.
Strategic and Collaborative Mindset:
  • Ability to support business development efforts, develop key customer relationships, and contribute to the overall engineering strategy and technology roadmaps.
Additional Leadership Capabilities:
  • Experience in mentoring, training, and supporting the career development of team members within a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
