Job summary

Simple Machines, a boutique technology firm, seeks a Principal Software Engineer to lead the design and delivery of large-scale data platforms. You will own backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure while collaborating with clients and internal teams.

You’ll work across the full stack in a hands-on role, solving hard problems, and driving end-to-end outcomes in a consultative engineering environment. Hybrid work in London, UK.

Qualifications

• Strong foundation in JVM-based development with Kotlin preferred or Java
• Experience designing data-driven APIs
• Background on large-scale web services
• Solid SQL with schema design and performance awareness
• Deep experience with automated testing (unit/integration; TDD/BDD)
• Frontend/full-stack exposure with React, TypeScript, Redux, Tailwind
• Cloud infra experience: AWS/GCP/Azure; IaC tools like Terraform or CloudFormation
• Containerised deployments with Docker, ECS, Kubernetes or equivalent
• Nice-to-have: Scala or functional concepts; asynchronous, concurrent backends; NoSQL platforms; strong Git workflows

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend services for a scalable marketing platform
• Own API and infrastructure design for robust applications
• Document designs and requirements for internal teams and clients
• Deliver end-to-end: build, automate, deploy, operate and support systems
• Collaborate with clients and delivery teams to translate business needs into tech solutions
• Work in an Agile, iterative delivery model
• Collaborate in a hybrid setup with remote and in-person team members and stakeholders
