Hargreaves Lansdown is recruiting a Principal Software Engineer to lead architecture and drive our technology transformation in the Investment Growth Tribe. You will shape high-level architectures, set guardrails, and empower engineering teams to deliver data-driven solutions.

Based in Bristol with hybrid working, you’ll mentor engineers, collaborate with product managers, and champion observability, security, and scalable cloud-native patterns for future-state systems.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated leadership in legacy technology transformation.
• Strong expertise in modern architectural patterns, cloud-native design, and container orchestration.
• Skilled communicator able to influence and engage at every level of the organisation.
• Proven ability to balance trade-offs, costs, and technical constraints.
• Experience coaching teams towards engineering and architecture best practices.
• Deep understanding of design patterns, security, networking, observability, and system flows.
• Adept at producing clear, concise architectural documentation.

Responsibilities

• Define and document high-level solution architectures, outlining trade-offs, risks, and dependencies.
• Provide architectural principles and best-practice guidelines for teams.
• Foster data-driven decision-making with cross-team metrics.
• Promote documentation practices, including ADRs, memos, and diagrams.
• Guide cloud architecture choices around container orchestration and AWS services.
• Champion observability, logging, security, and networking best practices.
• Identify opportunities to enhance Developer Experience and tooling.
• Mentor engineering teams through pairing and skills development.
• Lead conversations around Event-Driven Architecture, cost forecasting, and future-state design.
• Partner with Product and Engineering Managers to align priorities.
