Job summary

Mayer Brown is seeking an experienced Transport Planner to join our development planning team in a hybrid role between Woking and London. You will lead development-led transport planning projects, from feasibility through to planning submissions and delivery, advising clients and planning authorities along the way.

We value strong UK development planning experience, clear communication, and commercial awareness, with opportunities for progression to Principal and broader team growth.

Qualifications

• Strong UK development planning experience with clear communication and commercial awareness.
• Experience preparing and reviewing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, and technical notes.
• Understanding of TRICS, TEMPro, and junction modelling.
• Experience with developers, planning consultants, authorities.
• Strong report writing and ability to explain transport issues to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage development-led transport planning projects, including TAs, T Statements, Travel Plans, access appraisals and feasibility studies.
• Advise clients from early site promotion through planning submissions, conditions, S106/S278 and delivery.
• Liaise with clients, planning authorities, highway authorities and design teams; review technical work and budgets.
• For principals, play a stronger role in client account development, fee proposals and team growth.

Senior or Principal Transport Planner, Development Planning

Woking or London, hybrid

Mayer Brown is looking for an experienced Transport Planner to join our growing Transport Planning team, with a focus on development planning, access strategy and practical, deliverable transport advice.

This is a good opportunity for someone who enjoys taking ownership of projects, working directly with clients and local authorities, and seeing development proposals progress from early feasibility through planning and delivery. You might already be operating at Senior level and looking for a clearer route to Principal, or you may already be a Principal Transport Planner looking for a more visible role in an independent, multidisciplinary consultancy.

At Mayer Brown, you will work in a close-knit team backed by the stability and expertise of a long-established consultancy. Our transport planners work alongside highways, infrastructure, drainage, environmental and place-making specialists, giving you broad exposure to projects and the opportunity to shape practical solutions rather than working in a narrow technical silo.

What you will be doing

You will lead and manage development-led transport planning projects, including Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, access appraisals, feasibility studies and technical notes. You will advise clients from early site promotion and pre-application stages through to planning submissions, conditions, S106 / S278 matters and delivery.

You will also liaise with clients, planning authorities, highway authorities and wider design teams, review technical work, manage project budgets and support junior colleagues. For candidates operating at Principal level, there will be scope to take a stronger role in client account development, fee proposals and shaping the future growth of the team.

What we are looking for

We are interested in people with strong UK development planning experience who can combine technical judgement with clear communication and commercial awareness.

You will probably bring:

• Experience preparing and reviewing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans and supporting technical notes.
• Good understanding of TRICS, TEMPro and junction modelling, such as Junctions, LinSig or similar.
• Experience working with developers, planning consultants, architects, local planning authorities and highway authorities.
• Strong report writing and the ability to explain transport issues clearly to non-specialists.
• The confidence to manage projects, deadlines and client expectations.
• A collaborative approach and an interest in mentoring less experienced colleagues.

Experience in residential, mixed-use, retail, commercial or regeneration projects would be useful. Professional membership of CIHT, TPS, CILT or a similar body, or working towards this, would be welcomed.
