Job description

We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Senior/Principal Structural Engineer to join our highly regarded, award-winning Civil & Structural team in Plymouth or Exeter. This role offers the opportunity to lead and deliver exciting projects, supported by a talented team within a collaborative and people-focused culture.

You will join a multidisciplinary environment, with the opportunity to work alongside other successful divisions such as MEP, Nuclear, and Smart Energy and Sustainability. Projects typically range from £10M-£50M in value across sectors including Education, Residential, Heritage, Healthcare, Commercial, Logistics and Distribution, and Defence.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery:

  • Lead the design and delivery of structural engineering projects, from concept and scheme design to detailed design, tender, and construction packages.
  • Oversee the preparation of calculation packages for submission to Building Control and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Provide technical oversight and review contributions from project engineers and technicians.
  • Promote innovation in design while maintaining high-quality standards and adhering to Hydrock’s quality assurance processes.

Team Management:

  • Manage and develop graduate engineers, engineers, and technicians within your team.
  • Take ownership of resource planning, ensuring the efficient allocation of team capacity across projects.
  • Contribute to divisional initiatives such as task groups and design innovation.

Client and Business Development:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, architects, and contractors.
  • Support the preparation of fee proposals, bids, and ITTs.
  • Participate in client networking and represent the team at industry events, with a focus on cultivating new opportunities.

About You

  • MEng or BEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered or Involved in working towards Chartered status with IStructE or ICE.
  • Proven experience in building structures design across various sectors.
  • Proficiency in analysis, modelling, and hand calculations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams on projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage clients and inspire team members.
