Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity where you will hold the Lead Design Engineer position on one or more Projects in our Energy Sector. Within this sector, Costain delivers projects to industry-leading clients across various phases. Whether it be a concept study, FEED, or EPCm project, you will work as part of a multi-discipline team to deliver best-in-class engineering on time and within budget. Our pipeline offers opportunities to work in areas from brownfield Oil and Gas assets to cutting-edge Hydrogen production and storage. We also offer opportunities in sectors such as Nuclear, Defence, and Transport. Costain provides a collaborative and supportive working environment to enable our people to thrive.

This is a hybrid role with 2-3 days based at the Manchester office, with the option for flexible working.

Senior Engineers will be considered for the position. Responsibilities and experience requirements will be adjusted accordingly, with a gap analysis and development plan to address role-specific needs.

Responsibilities

As a client-facing C&I Engineer, your responsibilities may include:

  • C&I discipline technical input for projects and proposals, including preparation, checking, and approval of engineering documentation.
  • Organizing discipline staff, allocating work, and ensuring delivery against plan.
  • Mentoring and developing graduates and less experienced engineers.
  • Producing high-quality C&I engineering deliverables on schedule, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable national and international codes, legislation, and standards.
  • Preparing equipment and materials requisitions for control systems, safety systems, analyser houses, field instrumentation, and other equipment.
  • Preparing installation scopes of work.
  • Reviewing supplier quotations and preparing technical bid assessments.

Additional specific tasks may include:

  • Full life-cycle development (hardware and software) of control or protection systems.
  • Software qualification of SMART devices and PLCs.
  • Functional Safety determination (both probabilistic and deterministic).
  • Preparation of C&I equipment datasheets and specifications.
  • Production and modification of C&I safety cases and cybersecurity cases.
Qualifications
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer.
  • Good knowledge of design practices and installation requirements across industries.
  • 15 years of engineering experience in Oil & Gas, Nuclear, and/or Water sectors.
  • Extensive knowledge of UK legislation and standards.
  • Competence in installing equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Membership with a relevant professional body or close to obtaining such titles.
