Job Description

Operation PDST Biological Development and Launch at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated Principal Scientist with a strong understanding of early and late-stage biological pipeline cell line development and genetic characterization to lead the Molecular Biology team at the AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC). The ABC site, based in Worcester, MA, offers a unique setting where biologics drug discovery, development, and manufacturing coexist in one location. The leader will be responsible for asset transition from discovery into development, vector construct development, cell line development, cell bank genetic characterization and qualification, as well as modernizing traditional molecular biology methods through innovation and developing next-generation genetic characterization platform processes. Experience with cutting-edge technologies such as NGS, Omics, AI/ML, high-throughput automation, and digitalization for process optimization are also valued.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and execute discipline strategy aligned with functional goals and scientific objectives, ensuring successful transition of AbbVie biological assets from discovery to development.
  2. Guide the development and genetic characterization of cell lines and cell banks across all pipeline stages.
  3. Identify and implement advanced technologies to support accelerated biological pipeline programs.
  4. Provide strategic, operational, and scientific guidance to the molecular biology team.
  5. Conduct laboratory research independently, troubleshooting experimental designs and equipment as needed.
  6. Apply creative thinking to solve complex problems and promote new technologies, effectively communicating ideas to diverse audiences.
  7. Manage multiple projects across therapeutic areas within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  8. Present scientific concepts and results to scientific and non-scientific stakeholders, maximizing impact and value.
  9. Advance scientific expertise within the function, mentoring colleagues, sharing knowledge, and assessing emerging business challenges to achieve goals.

Qualifications:

  • BS with 14+ years, MS with 12+ years, or PhD with 6+ years of experience in Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or related fields.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across diverse groups.
  • Broad experience in cell line development across various cell types, with a proven track record in drug candidate development.
  • Expertise in molecular biology techniques, including plasmid construction and genetic characterization.
  • Innovative with a history of developing new methods or workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail in organizational, documentation, and communication skills, fostering effective collaboration.
