About The Role

With the space landscape rapidly evolving, there has never been a more exciting time to help shape the future of sustainable solutions in space engineering systems. The NCC's Space team is at the forefront of private and grant-funded space development programs across various disciplines. These initiatives aim to revolutionize and accelerate the UK space industry while supporting government efforts to position the UK as a leader in space engineering.


We are seeking an inspiring and experienced Principal Research Engineer to provide technical leadership, establish industrial technology partnerships, and drive strategic sector ambitions. This role is on a 12-month fixed-term basis, full-time or part-time.

What you'll be doing

As Principal Research Engineer, you will ensure the technical quality and engineering excellence of space systems engineering programs within the NCC's space portfolio.

  • Develop local sector strategies, guide roadmap development, foster customer relationships, and identify new growth opportunities.
  • Innovate across a range of technologies, from design to automation, digital engineering, and flying demonstrators, contributing to the UK's Space R&D activity.
  • Advocate and champion Space Systems Engineering thinking at the NCC, influencing the organization's approach to the Space sector throughout project lifecycles.
  • Build strong working relationships across NCC, including upskilling staff in space-specific areas.
What we are looking for

You will lead technical tasks within the Space sector, deliver projects to high standards, and help shape the future direction of the NCC's technical strategy.

  • Relevant degree or substantial experience in key technical roles or working with composite materials in space systems engineering.
  • Experience providing technical oversight in space systems engineering, ensuring high standards and governance.
  • Leadership in space systems engineering programs, with a multidisciplinary background.
  • Understanding of the full project/product lifecycle.
  • Commercial awareness and bid writing experience are beneficial.
