Job Purpose
Lead the technical delivery of a large complex engineering programme or multiple projects for Critical National Infrastructure in the Air Traffic Management domain and line manage a team of Engineering Managers. This encompasses a range of technologies, software applications, and hardware infrastructure used for managing and controlling air traffic.

Dimensions

  • Direct Line management of a team up to 10
  • Manage work packages of 50 to 100 FTEs and technical management up to £50m pa of external capital spend over a 5-year period

Autonomy

  • Ability to identify and resolve complex delivery challenges, showing excellent leadership and communication skills, having difficult conversations where needed while bringing teams and stakeholders with you.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks in a portfolio of work packages, deploying resources to meet business priorities
  • Ability to tailor project delivery processes to suit the complexity of the programme
  • Ability to challenge technical project plans ensuring best practice and alignment with the NATS' safety, service and ethical principles.

Job Scope

  • Lead a team of Project Engineering Managers (Systems Engineering Managers); including wellbeing, technical & personal development.
  • Lead Continuous improvement of team's capability and processes, maintain knowledge of best practice and drive a consistent approach.
  • Provide technical leadership support to Project / Programme Managers when interfacing with senior management and suppliers etc.
  • Be the single point of escalation for engineering decisions on a portfolio of projects and programmes.
  • Advocate NATS behaviours, in particular the leadership behaviours

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent RQF level 6 or SCQF level 10 qualification) in an Engineering or Technology discipline and have experience of managing the technical delivery of complex projects following industry best practice techniques (preferably in a safety related sector).
  • As an alternative to the required qualification, the job holder may of completed structured engineering or technology training equivalent to the required qualification and have extensive experience.
  • Ability and confidence to make critical decisions under challenging conditions balancing cost, quality & time
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams located across sites; including permanent & temporary staff and suppliers
  • Ability to communicate with a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders
