Qualifications

  • Experience in safety analysis techniques and familiarity with UK Defence Standards.
  • STEM degree with relevant product safety experience in a regulated industry.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety assessments and coordinate a small safety team.
  • Apply recognized good practices and conduct safety analysis.

Skills

Familiarity with UK Defence Standards
Safety analysis techniques (FTA, ETA, FMEA, STPA)
STEM degree with Product Safety experience
Knowledge of IEC 61508 and/or IEC 61511
Experience with model-based Systems Engineering
Chartered Engineer status or working towards it
Experience in the Defence Industry
Familiarity with Cyber-Safety concepts
Experience developing complex Systems of Systems
Knowledge of Safety standards outside Defence

Job description

Job Title: Principal Product Safety Engineer

Location: Multiple locations including Barrow-in-Furness, Brough, Filton, Frimley, Portsmouth, Weymouth, or Manchester. We offer hybrid and flexible working arrangements. Please discuss options with your recruiter.

What you’ll be doing:
  1. Attending and reporting to Daily Stand Up Meetings (DSUM)
  2. Design activities including:
  3. Applying Product Safety Recognised Good Practice (e.g., IEC 61508, RTCA DO 178C)
  4. Coordinating and undertaking analysis (Hazard identification, Analysis, and Assessment)
  5. Defining suitable design options and analyzing them
  6. Applying a systems engineering approach to safety products, including working within a centralized modeling tool
  7. Leading and coordinating a small safety team as required
  8. Preparing safety assessments to support system design and development
  9. Preparing Design Safety Justification inputs
  10. Providing Safety SME support during product design and gate reviews
  11. Governing and assuring parts of the organization
  12. Supporting the development and maintenance of a healthy product Safety Culture within the team and wider business
Your skills and experiences:
  • Familiarity with UK Defence Standards and publications such as Defence Standard 00-56, 00-55, DSA-01, DSA-02
  • Good knowledge of safety analysis techniques such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), and System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA)
  • STEM degree with Product Safety experience in a regulated industry
  • Knowledge of IEC 61508 and/or IEC 61511 standards for Safety Instrumented Systems
  • Experience with model-based Systems Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards it
  • Experience in the Defence Industry
  • Familiarity with Cyber-Safety concepts
  • Experience developing complex Systems of Systems (SoS)
  • Knowledge of Safety standards outside Defence, e.g., Civil Aerospace, Rail, Oil & Gas
