Are you an experienced product leader with a strong technical background in AI, machine learning, and data-intensive platforms? Do you enjoy translating emerging technologies into scalable products that deliver measurable value? We are looking for a Principal Product Manager to drive the development and evolution of advanced AI capabilities within a research-focused technology environment.

You will take ownership of a critical AI infrastructure component that enables intelligent information discovery, automated research processes, and sophisticated question-answering capabilities.

This position combines strategic product ownership with hands-on technical collaboration. You will work at the intersection of product management, AI research, data science, and software engineering, influencing both the long-term direction of the technology and its practical implementation.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams responsible for AI development, platform engineering, data infrastructure, and user-facing applications.

Your Role

As Principal Product Manager, you will lead the product direction of a sophisticated agentic retrieval and AI orchestration system.

This technology coordinates the different components involved in generating reliable, evidence-based AI responses. It integrates information retrieval, reasoning, tool selection, model execution, and source attribution into a unified process.

A major priority will be transforming proven experimental capabilities into reliable, scalable production services. You will determine how new functionality is introduced, establish delivery priorities, and coordinate implementation across multiple engineering and product teams.

Beyond the technical roadmap, you will identify opportunities to extend the platform with additional AI tools, agentic skills, data sources, and intelligent workflows.

You will also play a central role in ensuring that shared AI capabilities support the needs of multiple products and development teams, while maintaining architectural consistency, performance, and operational efficiency.

This is a senior individual-contributor position requiring substantial autonomy, strong product judgment, and the ability to influence technical decisions across organisational boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

AI Product Strategy & Roadmap

• Define and continuously refine the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for agentic retrieval, AI orchestration, and shared Generative AI capabilities.
• Identify opportunities to improve intelligent information retrieval, multi-step reasoning, and AI-assisted research workflows.
• Balance customer requirements, technological opportunities, business objectives, and architectural constraints when determining product priorities.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and assess their potential contribution to future product capabilities.
• Establish clear product outcomes, measurable objectives, and delivery priorities.

Technical Product Development

• Guide the transition of advanced AI prototypes into stable, production-ready functionality through carefully planned development and release stages.
• Collaborate closely with AI engineers, data scientists, architects, and platform specialists to translate product concepts into implementable technical requirements.
• Develop detailed product specifications, user stories, acceptance criteria, and prioritised engineering backlogs.
• Evaluate technical trade-offs involving model performance, latency, scalability, reliability, infrastructure dependencies, and operational costs.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in AI and technology product development: A minimum of 10 years of experience bringing sophisticated AI-driven or data-intensive solutions from concept to market. You have demonstrated long-term responsibility for product vision, strategic decisions, discovery, prioritisation, and delivery, including at least three consecutive years with the same organisation. Your practical achievements are more important than your formal job title, and your background may include product management, technical leadership, or applied AI.
• Advanced knowledge of Generative AI: Strong expertise in designing and delivering GenAI solutions, particularly those involving retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic workflows, and AI evaluation methodologies. You understand how to assess the quality, reliability, and effectiveness of these technologies.
• Independent product leadership: A proven ability to define strategic direction, make complex prioritisation decisions, and coordinate successful execution across multiple engineering teams, technology functions, and external stakeholders.
• Commercial and go-to-market expertise: Solid experience developing and implementing go-to-market strategies, connecting technical innovation with customer needs, product adoption, and business objectives.
• Experimentation and data-driven decision-making: Experience applying hypothesis-driven product development, including A/B testing, experimentation frameworks, and measurable success criteria. You know how to establish a culture where product decisions are supported by evidence and continuous learning.
• Hands-on technical exploration: Confidence using AI coding tools, rapid prototyping, and proof-of-concept development to explore opportunities and test assumptions. You are comfortable collaborating directly with software engineers and data scientists to validate technical feasibility and product value.
• Customer and market understanding: Experience conducting customer discovery and translating user insights into product opportunities. Familiarity with academic publishing, scientific research, or professional information services would be a significant advantage.
• Strong technical and architectural understanding: The ability to evaluate architectural approaches, understand system boundaries, and assess technical trade-offs. You can contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions and work effectively with software architects, AI researchers, engineering teams, and platform specialists.
