Job Description for Principal Process Engineer:

As part of our multi-discipline Engineering team, you’ll work across multiple sites and projects, with opportunities to lead projects from initial specification through to operational delivery. You’ll be a self-motivated team player eager to develop your career within an integrated team environment.

The role requires/travel may be involved between UKNNL sites and customer locations, as needed.

The location for this role is flexible, based at Preston or Risley.

Main Responsibilities for Principal Process Engineer:
  • Leading a team of multi-discipline engineers to develop detailed engineering designs for process plants.
  • Reviewing and approving calculations, drawings, reports, and design memos.
  • Collaborating with Project Managers on estimates, schedules, and ensuring project delivery to time, cost, quality, and safety standards.
  • Working with procurement to define requirements and coordinate with suppliers for successful project outcomes.
  • Acting as the client representative on subcontracted design work.
  • Leading plant commissioning activities, including developing and executing commissioning plans.
  • Ensuring designs comply with regulations like DSEAR, PSSR, and Functional Safety.
  • Supporting troubleshooting and problem-solving in active plant areas.
  • Interfacing with safety teams to deliver HAZOP and related safety reports.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and overseeing their design work.
  • Collaborating with discipline leads to identify and implement business improvements.
  • Participating in employee development initiatives for technical and behavioral growth.

Essential Criteria:

  • Chartered Engineer.
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field with extensive mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience leading design projects in regulated industries.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and quality/environmental standards.
  • Experience in equipment procurement and support.
  • Proven leadership in design reviews and HAZOPs.
  • Ability to produce substantiation reports.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex concepts clearly.
  • Experience commissioning hazardous processes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to obtain SC security clearance, including background checks and UK residency requirements.

  • Experience in the nuclear sector.
  • Leadership qualities and high energy levels.
  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Experience in hazardous area classification, pressure relief systems, and functional safety.
