A leading organization in the public sector is seeking a Principal Planning Officer to manage a caseload of planning applications and provide strategic advice. This 6-month role, based in North Somerset, involves processing applications, preparing reports for appeals, and engaging with various stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Town and Country Planning and experience in Development Management.

Qualifications

Job description

Job Title: Principal Planning Officer

Location: Weston-super-Mare, United Kingdom

Client: Radiant Systems Inc

Duration: 6 Months

Responsible to: Strategic Development Service Manager

Key relationships/Functional links with: Staff at all levels in the organization, members of the public, developers, statutory consultees, and other public and private bodies.

Main Purpose of Job: To handle a caseload of planning applications and pre-application enquiries for major and strategic developments and to defend the organization’s position at appeal where necessary.

  1. Process major planning applications and make recommendations.
  2. Prepare reports, including proofs of evidence for appeals, and present evidence at hearings, public inquiries, and court proceedings.
  3. Provide information and advice to businesses, the public, and stakeholders about legislative requirements and standards for compliance with planning legislation.
  4. Hold a valid driving license and have own transport or provide an alternative suitable method of travel.
  5. Demonstrate experience working with complex and challenging areas of Development Management.
  6. Possess academic qualifications in Town and Country Planning or equivalent experience at Honours degree level or above.
  7. Have comprehensive knowledge of legislation, policy, regulations, and professional codes of practice for Development Management.
  8. Ability to prepare and present information/evidence clearly at Public Inquiries and planning meetings.
  9. Ability to manage and organize own work and assist colleagues to meet deadlines.

The role is based in North Somerset with flexible working arrangements, requiring attendance at key meetings such as site visits and planning committees.
