Principal Planner

Location: Bristol

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Planner to join a rapidly growing planning team in Bristol. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of one of the largest and most dynamic planning teams in the region, involved in a wide range of high-profile projects across multiple sectors including residential, commercial, retail, healthcare, energy, education, and leisure.

As a Principal Planner, you will play a key role in managing and overseeing planning applications and appeals, ensuring that projects meet client requirements and are delivered on time. You will also be responsible for mentoring junior planners, managing projects, and contributing to the growth and development of the planning team. This role offers the chance to work on complex and diverse planning challenges for both private and public sector clients across the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee planning applications and appeals, ensuring timely delivery and client satisfaction.
  • Liaise and negotiate with planning officers, stakeholders, and other relevant parties.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of planning applications, appeals, and pre-application enquiries.
  • Mentor and guide junior planning colleagues, helping to develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Identify business development opportunities, building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Attend external events to network and raise the profile of the team and the business.
  • Contribute to the team's strategic planning, ensuring projects align with business goals and client expectations.

Key Qualities and Qualifications:

  • MRTPI status with at least three years of post-graduation experience in the planning sector, ideally within the private or public sector.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the UK planning system.
  • Proven ability to manage complex planning projects and deliver successful outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex planning concepts clearly to clients and stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive, positive, and resilient approach to work, with excellent time management, organisational, and negotiation skills.
  • A market awareness and the ability to identify and develop new business opportunities.
