Job Description:

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Principal, or Associate, Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing Geo Division team in our Northampton or Birmingham office.

The Team – Our Geo Division

Geo is a core discipline within Hydrock – it’s where we come from, with both our CEO and COO having a Geo background!

Hydrock is a leading consultancy firm specialising in geoenvironmental and geotechnical engineering. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, we deliver high-quality solutions to clients across various sectors, including renewables, commercial, industrial, residential, infrastructure, and aviation.

The Role:

Reporting to the Midlands Geo Director Paul, you will sit on the senior management team within the region, representing the region and supporting colleagues with multi-disciplinary work winning. Your focus will be to develop and deliver our business plan, lead on everything Geotechnics within the region, and identify new opportunities for the Midlands and national teams as they arise.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Be the go-to expert within the Midlands for geotechnics knowledge. Keep up to date with industry news, innovation, and share new knowledge with the team.
  • Drive profitable and sustainable work winning within the team, assist them in maintaining up-to-date forecasting, project planning, and financial control.
  • Act as a report approver, providing a ‘sense check’ to ensure that the tone of reports is appropriate, liability is managed, and commercial aspects of all recommendations are suitable.
  • Work with your team and the wider organisation to prepare commercially robust and profitable fee proposals focusing on scope of works and programmes.
  • Proactively develop the Hydrock brand and build relationships (both internally and externally) within the Midlands region through attending conferences, social media, and sharing thought pieces.
  • Responsible for maintaining the quality of technical work within the team and working with others to drive productivity across Geo.
  • Be a problem solver, working with consultants at all levels to arrive at pragmatic, cost-effective geotechnical solutions.
  • Collaborate with Practice leads, the Director – Geo Midland (Paul), and Divisional Geo Director to develop and implement strategic initiatives, drive business, and maintain and improve technical standards and governance procedures, with an emphasis on reducing commercial and H&S risks.
  • Be a self-motivated technical leader who promotes best practices, develops colleagues, and manages their team effectively.

Core Job Functions:

Your core functions will include:

  • Providing extensive geotechnical technical knowledge to the Geo team.
  • Authoring or approving complex technical reports for regional and national issuance.
  • Working with your team and nationally to prepare financially robust fee proposals, focusing on scope and programme, aiming to win profitable work within Hydrock’s geotechnical comfort zone.
  • Promoting best practice within Geo in the region and seeking support from Practice Leads as needed.
  • Identifying and managing risks to Hydrock and clients.
  • Highlighting and addressing technical and financial weaknesses within Geo through training and mentoring programs.
  • Driving lessons learned from the wider Geo team within your own team and vice versa.
  • Developing strong communication, analysis, and technical skills within your team, promoting multidisciplinary working.

Other responsibilities:

  • Supporting colleagues’ development.
  • Leading work-winning activities and supporting bids with technical input.
  • Seeking opportunities to deliver new offerings and differentiate Hydrock.
  • Ensuring professional development through training and CPD.
  • Driving Hydrock’s ethos to remain a top employer and contributing to the strategic and Geo business plans.
