Job description
Overview

We are recruiting for a Principal Nuclear Environmental Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management Consultancy business. Due to the rapid growth of our business in the civil nuclear waste management and environment sector, we require more support to deliver and continue to expand our expertise. We have a leading role in waste strategy, inventory and compliance underpinning the future management of radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuels and nuclear materials. We also support clients with Site End-State decision making and underpinning environmental activities. In the UK, we deliver a diverse range of projects for waste producers, waste management organisations and strategic authorities across all aspects of the waste lifecycle. We are delivering similarly interesting and exciting projects across the globe including projects for clients in Norway, Central & Eastern Europe and Japan. The role can be based at Harwell, Cumbria, Scrabster or Birchwood and other locations will be considered. We are operating under flexible working arrangements, with a mixture of office-based and home working environments.

Key Responsibilities

Your main responsibility will be to apply your knowledge, experience and expertise to the environmental aspects that need to be considered in site operations, radioactive waste management and nuclear decommissioning challenges. You will lead (or support) a range of consultancy projects and tasks for clients based in the UK and overseas, including:

  • Environmental underpinning activities to satisfy regulatory compliance (e.g. environmental permitting, GRR, environmental management systems).
  • Developing documentation for new build GDA Environmental Submissions (demonstrating how environmental regulations and Radioactive Substances Regulation are addressed).
  • Contributing to Environmental Impact Assessments and/or consideration of conventional impacts from waste management activities.
  • Undertaking sustainability assessments.
  • Support to site-end state development and land quality projects, including data gathering/analysis; options assessments; technical justification.
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality competitive proposals to our clients and build client relationships.
  • Support wider business development activities and provide input on the strategic direction of the team.
  • Support the development of our team through training, knowledge dissemination and mentoring.
Qualifications
  • Degree qualification (or equivalent training and experience) in appropriate environmental, physical science or engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience in a comparable role (individual candidates need experience of some of the technical topic areas described above, not necessarily all).
  • Good working knowledge of relevant regulations for nuclear site permitting and operations.
  • Experience of bid leadership and proposal preparation.
  • Ability to manage time and priorities while working on several varied projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tailoring outputs to the requirements of different stakeholders.
  • Good people skills - able to clearly explain concepts to aid training and development of colleagues; facilitate workshops and manage stakeholder engagement activities.

Additionally, the following desirable qualities would be advantageous:

  • Actively pursuing (or already hold) relevant Chartership.
  • Recognised technical leadership within the industry
  • Practical experience of environmental management on nuclear sites
  • Willingness to travel on business on occasion. This may include sites across the UK and overseas (e.g. Europe, USA, Japan, Australia).
Location, Working Arrangements & Benefits

The role can be based at Harwell, Cumbria, Scrabster or Birchwood and other locations will be considered. People are our greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent. In addition to the benefits you’d expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family-friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships.
