Job Description

Job Title: Principal Naval Architect

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Brough, Frimley, Weymouth, Filton, Portsmouth or Manchester. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: £45,628 + depending on experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing the SSN AUKUS, the world’s most advanced submarine.
  • Applying your knowledge of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, seamanship, and outfit, infrastructure, or whole boat design to support major UK shipbuilding programmes.
  • Supporting sea trials, inclining experiments, and other commissioning activities across multiple submarine classes.
  • Engaging in research and development to develop world-leading capabilities.
  • Writing and presenting technical reports.

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a Naval Architect.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.

Desirable:

  • Degree in Naval Architecture.
  • Experience in ship design analysis and build support.
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Previous experience with defense projects.

The Naval Architecture team:

As a Principal Naval Architect, you'll be a key member of one of the UK's largest and fastest-growing Naval Architecture Departments, working on complex submarine design and build projects for the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy.

This role offers the opportunity to work on submarines throughout their lifecycle, from early design to build support and commissioning. The department includes teams specializing in weights engineering, stability and hydrostatics, infrastructure support, seamanship and outfit, maneuvering and control, fluid dynamics, and design and development. Depending on your location, you will work one day a week on-site, with travel to Barrow expected for work commitments. Relocation support packages are available for eligible roles.
