Job description

Energy Transition and Principal Mechanical Engineer Role at Stantec

The Energy Transition is the fundamental shift underway in how we, as a global community, produce, distribute, and consume energy, with the overarching goal of transitioning to a lower carbon future.

Will you be part of the solution? If you are passionate about making a difference in the sector, then join Stantec's industry-leading Energy team in driving change!

As a result of recent successes and the development of new projects and clients, Stantec is looking to recruit a Principal Mechanical Engineer into our Energy & Resources team. This role can be based in any of our UK offices but ideally should be reachable from the Midlands.

Working as part of our Waste and Generation Team, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects including conventional EfW plants, district heating, gasification projects, hydrogen generation schemes, and multiple biogas production projects.

This role involves involvement in the entire project lifecycle, from optioneering to detailed design and installation. Responsibilities include feasibility studies, site surveys, investigations, and collaborating with clients, partners, and team members to develop designs and solutions across various projects in Stantec's Energy and Resources sector.

As designers in the construction, energy, and waste sectors, we take our responsibility for HSE matters seriously and foster a culture of open scrutiny and continuous improvement.

More information about Stantec's Energy & Resources team can be found here: Stantec Energy Transition - UK

About You

You should have experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, ideally with energy/power sector experience or related process plant experience, and be either chartered or working towards chartered status.

Our team produces technical specifications across various technologies (e.g., Steam, piping, hydrogen, biomass, EfW plants), schedules, and reports. We support collaborative design outputs such as General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams. You should understand these activities and be able to communicate technical updates effectively to clients and team members.

Experience in creating specifications, scoping documents, and assessing vendor designs and progress is also desirable.

Most importantly, you will embody and support our values of client focus, community-minded designing, collaboration, and service excellence.

Why Join Us?
  • Our People Culture: A close-knit, friendly, and collaborative environment
  • Awards: Recognized as the International Consulting Firm of the Year and Best Place to Work at the 2024 NCE awards, and among the top 10 most sustainable companies globally
  • Benefits: Competitive salary, pension, holidays, private medical insurance, gym discounts, and more
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Exciting projects across the UK&I
  • Industry-leading training, development, and professional subscriptions
