Job summary

YTL Construction UK seeks a Principal Mechanical Duty Holder to lead governance and assurance for mechanical safety across our projects. The role focuses on safe systems of work, permits to work, and competency frameworks to manage mechanical risks during construction, testing, and handover.

You will provide technical leadership, drive incident investigations, and collaborate with the Electrical Duty Holder to integrate mechanical and electrical interfaces, ensuring alignment with safety

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised institution (e.g., IMechE).
  • Significant experience managing mechanical systems in construction, infra, utilities, or major projects.
  • Proven track record leading mechanical safety during construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain Mechanical Safety Rules, safe systems of work, and Permit-to-Work.
  • Define and oversee competency for personnel and contractors.
  • Establish safe systems for mechanical isolation, depressurisation, and control of stored energy.
  • Provide governance for mechanical systems during construction, testing, commissioning, and handover.
  • Manage interfaces between mechanical and electrical systems with the Electrical Duty Holder.
  • Lead investigations into mechanical incidents and ensure corrective actions.
  • Support audits, inspections, regulatory engagement and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to construction methodologies, lifting plans, temporary works, and design reviews.
  • Support handover of mechanical systems to asset owners.

Job description

YTL Construction UK is seeking a Principal Mechanical Duty Holder to provide leadership, governance, and assurance for mechanical safety across our construction projects.

This is a senior technical leadership role, supporting the safe delivery of complex infrastructure projects while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and operational safety.

What You'll Do

Acting as the company's appointed Mechanical Duty Holder, you will be responsible for Mechanical Safety Rules, safe systems of work, competency standards, and permit-to-work arrangements, ensuring mechanical risks are effectively managed throughout construction, testing, commissioning, and handover.

You'll mainly:

  • own and maintain the company's Mechanical Safety Rules, safe systems of work, and Mechanical Permit-to-Work system
  • define and oversee competency requirements for personnel, contractors, and specialist service providers undertaking mechanical activities
  • establish and assure safe systems of work for mechanical isolation, depressurisation, restraint, and control of stored energy
  • provide technical governance for construction-phase mechanical systems, including pipework, pressure systems, rotating equipment, valves, and mechanical assemblies
  • ensure effective management of interfaces between mechanical and electrical systems in collaboration with the Electrical Duty Holder
  • lead investigations into mechanical incidents, near misses, and safety concerns, ensuring effective corrective and preventative actions are implemented
  • support audits, inspections, regulatory engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • provide expert input into construction methodologies, lifting plans, commissioning strategies, temporary works, and design reviews
  • support the safe and compliant handover of mechanical systems to asset owners
  • provide governance of YTL Construction's IMechE Professional Development Scheme, supporting the development of future engineering talent and professional registration.

What You'll Need

It is essential that you have:

  • a Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised professional institution such as IMechE
  • significant experience managing mechanical systems within construction, infrastructure, utilities, or major project environments
  • a proven track record in mechanical safety leadership during construction and commissioning activities
  • strong knowledge of mechanical safe systems of work, isolation processes, and control of stored energy
  • experience developing and implementing mechanical safety rules, procedures, and permit-to-work systems
  • experience assessing, approving, and assuring the competence of mechanical personnel and contractors
  • excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

It would be desirable for you to have:

  • NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification
  • experience of complex commissioning programmes, temporary works, or other high-risk mechanical activities
  • knowledge of pressure systems, lifting operations, and major infrastructure project delivery.
