About the Opportunity

Amentum is recruiting a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Energy business, supporting a key client’s UK nuclear fleet through a business transformation, and aiding new small modular reactor developers. Our work covers Licensing, New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling, with demand across the nuclear sector.

Your role involves managing and delivering mechanical design solutions on projects of varying sizes, working alongside Operations and Engineering Managers to ensure maximum value delivery. The position is based at one of our Energy offices (Newcastle, Warrington, Glasgow, Gloucester, Stockton, Bristol, or Knutsford), with flexible working patterns considered.

Role responsibilities:
  1. Take ownership of technical challenges, develop strategies, and implement solutions through stakeholder engagement.
  2. Deliver technical solutions (analysis and design).
  3. Produce and review design deliverables (assumption notes, technical specifications, calculation notes, methodology plans).
  4. Work with international SMR developers to pass the Office of Nuclear Regulation’s Generic Design Assessment process.
  5. Review and justify design decisions to the ONR.
  6. Fulfill and take ownership of CDM responsibilities.
Minimum qualifications and experience:
  • MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.
  • Experience in heavy infrastructure projects, nuclear, or regulated industries.
  • Chartered status or working towards Chartership (IMechE, MIET).
  • Ability to collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience with American codes in engineering design and/or construction.
  • Design experience with pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks, filters, HVAC equipment, and datasheet authoring.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, SolidWorks).
  • Experience with technical drawings per BS EN 8888 and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Familiarity with safety cases in industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of Matlab and MathCAD is beneficial.
  • Experience in writing test plans for Equipment Qualification.
  • Understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes in mechanical engineering is desirable.
