Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)

We are currently recruiting multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for major long-term frameworks across the UK.

RPS, in partnership with Tetra Tech, has secured a £100 million framework from United Utilities to improve river health in Northwest England, supporting long-term water industry projects.

With over 20 years of collaboration with United Utilities, this is an exciting phase as we approach AMP8, offering opportunities to create positive impact in the water sector.

Under this 10-year program, RPS will optimize projects, develop innovative solutions, and select the best options based on value, low carbon footprint, and cost, aiming to deliver resilient and eco-friendly water services.

About The Team:

Our Water Consulting team comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy services, supporting clients' business planning and delivery. The industry is evolving, presenting challenges and opportunities that require innovation, teamwork, and dedication.

We also work with several major UK water companies through various long-term frameworks, with a portfolio of AMP8 and beyond projects, offering long-term career development.

About You:

You should have experience in producing technical specifications, designing pumping and aeration systems, and preparing reports. Familiarity with collaborative design reviews and solution development is essential.

You will contribute to design outputs like General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, and P&ID diagrams, and possess strong communication skills for client presentations and technical discussions, including safety reviews like HAZOPs and ALMs.

You should understand water and wastewater treatment operations and be capable of assessing and developing mechanical designs for existing infrastructure.

Joining us means working on impactful projects with leading organizations, making a difference in communities, and leaving a lasting legacy in the water industry. We invite skilled professionals to be part of this exciting journey.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all project phases from feasibility to construction support, including site surveys.
  • Work on projects across UK water frameworks, liaising with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Support and mentor junior staff and review technical designs and reports.
  • Engage with clients to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and/or Inventor for technical drawings.
  • Conduct asset condition surveys and prepare related reports.
  • Contribute to P&ID development and mechanical design documentation.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with CDM regulations and quality procedures.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Experience in the water industry is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in pump design, P&ID creation, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and contract procurement methods.
  • Ability to manage time, costs, and quality effectively.
  • Support for junior staff's technical development.
  • Willingness to travel and inspect site installations.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or similar software is beneficial.

Qualifications:

  • An IMechE accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
  • Chartered status or working towards it, for senior roles.
  • Membership or near membership with professional bodies like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM.
