Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)

We are recruiting multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for major long-term frameworks across the UK, including a £100 million single-award framework from United Utilities to improve river health in the Northwest of England.

RPS has over 20 years of collaboration with United Utilities on innovative water projects. As we approach AMP8, this is an exciting time to work in the water industry, creating positive change with passionate organizations.

Under this 10-year framework, RPS will focus on program optimization, developing solutions, and selecting the best options based on value, carbon footprint, and cost, aiming to deliver exceptional water services and foster a resilient, eco-friendly Northwest.

About The Team:

RPS Water Consulting comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy development for water industry clients. We work on prestigious AMP8 programs leading into AMP9 and beyond, offering long-term career opportunities.

About You:

You will have experience producing technical outputs such as specifications, pump and aeration system designs, schedules, and reports. Familiarity with collaborative planning, design reviews, and safety assessments like HAZOPs and ALMs is essential. Understanding water and wastewater treatment processes and assessing site infrastructure are key skills.

Strong communication skills and the ability to deliver technical presentations are required. You should be prepared to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to innovative water solutions.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Engage in all project phases from feasibility to construction support.
  • Work on various projects across UK frameworks.
  • Coordinate with project stakeholders including managers, clients, and contractors.
  • Support and mentor junior team members.
  • Review technical designs, liaise with clients, and develop design deliverables.
  • Undertake asset surveys and contribute to P&ID creation.
  • Ensure design compliance with safety and quality standards.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Experience in the water industry is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of pump design, P&ID creation, specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with contract procurement methods and project management.
  • Ability to travel and inspect sites as needed.

Qualifications:

  • An IMechE accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
  • Chartered status or working towards it.
  • Membership or progression towards membership in a professional institution like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM.
