Overview:

We have an exciting opportunity within the Manufacturing Engineering function for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer. You will develop, improve, and support manufacturing processes and equipment to enable world-class production of Leonardo products. The role involves developing robust solutions considering broader project impacts, planning and delivering work across medium-term horizons, providing technical advice, and developing team members. This position is primarily focused on Delivery (Sustaining).

Leonardo is an international leader in developing advanced sensor products for airborne platforms, pushing technological boundaries in accuracy and safety.

The role is based in Edinburgh with a mix of home and on-site work.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop manufacturing processes based on product requirements, including research, design, modification, and testing.
  • Organize Manufacturing Maturity Reviews and maintain governance through the Lifecycle Management process.
  • Provide manufacturing decision-making support, including reviewing production schedules, labor, and material costs.
  • Prepare reports by analyzing data and trends.
  • Resolve complex product and production issues efficiently.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency through capacity analysis, workflow simulation, and layout planning.
  • Review manufacturing documentation and contribute to risk assessments and technical reports.
  • Ensure product and process quality through design, validation, and standards enforcement.
  • Participate in failure investigations using problem-solving techniques such as 8D.
  • Maintain manufacturing data accuracy, including routings and control plans.
  • Identify and lead continuous improvement activities and projects.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members.
  • Support customer engagement and product roadmaps with domain expertise.
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations to maintain reputation.

Candidate Requirements:
  • Minimum HND in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes and principles.
  • People management and leadership skills, including performance and change management.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate using data and analysis.
  • Understanding of operational frameworks and cross-functional business processes.
  • Ownership of work packages, planning, and scheduling abilities.
  • Experience across multiple product lifecycle phases and peer review processes.
  • Knowledge of risk/reward processes in engineering activities.
  • Effective communication skills, both technical and non-technical.
  • Ability to interact with customers and suppliers effectively.
  • Experience in capability and process development, implementing work practice changes.
