Job description

Principal - Long Term Oil & Energy Consulting

Holborn, London, UK.

Argus is where smart people belong and where they can grow. We answer the challenge of illuminating markets and shaping new futures.

Argus Consulting Services is the advisory division of Argus Media - the largest independent energy publisher in the world. We provide clients with customised analysis, research, data and commentary services on international energy markets. Our work is firmly focused on markets - their structure, logistics and economics. Argus Consulting Services draws on Argus' key strengths - energy markets expertise, global networks and proprietary databases - in order to deliver real client value.

Argus Consulting has two divisions. One undertakes tailor-made commissioned assignments for a wide variety of clients and across various sectors including oil & gas, petrochemicals, fertilizers, hydrogen, biofuels and energy transition solutions. The other division provides regular subscription services, again to a wide variety of clients and across a similar range of sectors. This role is part of the subscription services division.

What we're looking for

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced oil industry professional to join an established and successful team of consultants and analysts covering international crude and refined products markets. This is a senior hire with the potential to develop to a leadership role within the group. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge and understanding of international oil markets and in particular, refining and refined products markets. They must have extensive experience of working in a downstream environment, in either an operating or advisory capacity. It is essential that they can clearly demonstrate the capability to lead and innovate as well as having the ability to communicate effectively with clients and other stakeholders within Argus.

You will work with a small but growing team that provides regular research-based analysis and forecasts of international crude, refined products and LPG markets. Currently the focus is on the preparation and delivery of monthly products that provide clients with a forward view of supply/demand, trade and price in the short term.

The team is now developing an initiative to significantly enhance and expand coverage and analysis of long term oil and energy markets and trends. A key focus will be the impact and implications of the energy transition on global refining, its operators and markets. Critically, it will need to place downstream oil market analysis within the context of moves to decarbonise global energy systems and adopt new alternative fuels.

This new hire will help lead this initiative and will be responsible for developing, guiding and delivering content and product across this space. In addition to their role here they should also expect to be involved in the existing short term forecasting activities of the team, helping guide and develop content and communicating results and narrative as appropriate.

What will you be doing

  • Drive the direction and focus of the team in long term analysis and forecasting
  • Develop new products and deliverables to commercialise the new analysis and forecasts
  • Communicate analytical outcome and narrative to subscribers and internal stakeholders, in both written and verbal form
  • Help develop data sets and models to support the forecasting of supply, demand, capacity, imports and exports, price, production costs and margin for crude and refined products
  • Organise the cooperation and interaction with teams covering other fossil fuels and new energy forms
  • Identify new areas of analysis and associated business opportunities
  • Pursue the development and commercialisation of new products

What we're looking for in you

  • Preferably 20+ years of experience in or covering the downstream oil industry
  • A deep knowledge and understanding of global crude, refined products and wider energy markets
  • A proven track record in an analytical role, in another consultancy or industry player
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to create content from scratch
  • Intellectually curious and able to demonstrate structured problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong IT skills including advanced Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks to deadline and to meet targets

What's in it for you

  • Competitive salary and company bonus scheme
  • Group pension scheme
  • Group healthcare and life assurance scheme
  • Flexible working environment
  • 25 days holiday with annual increase up to 30 days
  • Subsidised gym membership
  • Season ticket travel loans
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Extensive internal and external training
