About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Principal Line Design Engineer to join the Power T&D team in Derby. We are open to full-time, part-time, including job share candidates, with a flexible working policy.

Role purpose:
  • Lead the design delivery of Overhead Line Projects up to 400kV, from tendering to project handover.
  • Ensure project compliance with industry standards, customer requirements, and company governance.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Deliver the assigned Line Design scope within the agreed programme, budget, and quality standards.
  • Promote innovation and value engineering.
  • Incorporate Safety and Sustainability by Design principles into all designs.
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as the OHL Lead Designer, responsible for delivery of tender and project scope, coordinating resources.
  • Ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, and client requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review tender or contract documentation to establish the OHL scope of works.
  • Apply best practices and lessons learned to all designs.
  • Review and approve all design models and drawings, including those from suppliers and subcontractors, following Quality Assurance processes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary designers under the guidance of the Engineering Manager.
  • Embed Safety and Sustainability by Design, ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations.
  • Prepare the Schedule of Deliverables, Risk Register, and Assumptions for tenders, collaborating with the Planner and Engineering Manager.
  • Lead the resolution of design challenges.
  • Ensure scope delivery aligns with programme, budget, and quality standards.
  • Engage with stakeholders for successful project delivery.
  • Follow Document Management procedures diligently.
  • Drive technical improvements and support innovation initiatives.
  • Mentor and supervise team members, contributing to their training needs.
  • Participate in external technical bodies, sharing insights within the company.
  • Act as delegate for the Design Delivery Manager when required.
  • Promote Balfour Beatty values and behaviors in daily work.
Interacts with:
  • PT&D Designers, Senior Leadership, Business Development, Project Teams, Business Partners, Group, Clients.
Who we're looking for
Skills Required:
  • Degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with formal training.
  • Extensive experience in Overhead Power Line design as a Design Engineer.
  • Knowledge of UK and European design standards (National Grid, ENA, BS EN 50341, IEC 60826).
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD and relevant support software.
  • Familiarity with CAD packages used in Line Design.
  • Chartered Engineer status is desirable.
